The monsoon weather pattern continues across New Mexico with thunderstorms developing in the afternoon.

These thunderstorms can be very beneficial raising streamflows and lowering water temperatures in rivers where the flow had been low and the water too warm for trout to be active.

Summer thunderstorms are particularly beneficial for the wild trout, mostly brown trout, that inhabit our rivers and streams. It helps them survive through the summer.

Thunderstorms do not, however, do much to improve the level of water in our reservoirs. What fills up our reservoirs is spring runoff from the melting snowpack.

This time of year some of the best fishing will be found by hiking into the small, headwater streams. These streams are the last remaining stronghold of the Rio Grande cutthroat trout. The fish will be small and beautiful. They will be wild fish. You will likely have more room to fish and you may even have the stream to yourself.

Not much has changed when it comes to a place to go camping. New Mexico State Parks are still closed to overnight camping. Fenton Lake State Park in the Jemez Mountains and Bluewater Lake State Park near Grants remain closed to all activities.

Most developed campgrounds on Santa Fe National Forest and Carson National Forest Lands are open. Stage Two Fire Restrictions have been lifted thanks to the increased moisture. Campfires and charcoal grills are now permitted. Dispersed camping is also allowed on National Forest lands. Fire restrictions on Bureau of Land Management Lands have also been lifted.

Day use is allowed on New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Wildlife Management Areas. No overnight camping. Morphy Lake, Monastery Lake and Rio Costilla Open Gate properties are closed.

The Department stocked 4,464 channel catfish July 30 in small municipal lakes and park ponds throughout Southern New Mexico. These fish averaged 18 inches in size. The limit on these catfish is two fish per-day.

The best fishing currently in the Jemez Mountains is in the area’s streams and rivers. Most are running very low and have not been stocked. The Jemez River is flowing at just 5.49 cubic-feet-per-second. They all contain wild brown trout. The only recent stocking has been in the Rio Cebolla near Fenton Lake. The fishing should be fair-to-good here. It was stocked July 29 with 302 rainbow trout.

San Gregorio Lake is open but has not been stocked recently. It may still be fair for any remaining rainbow trout from earlier stockings.

Abiquiu Lake is open for fishing 24/7. There is no overnight camping. The lake level is low and four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended for the launching of boats as the ramp does not reach the water. Fishing has been fair for smallmouth bass and walleye. Night fishing for catfish should be worth a try.

The Chama River below Abiquiu Dam is running at 451 cubic-feet-per-second. This is a medium flow and fishing could be fair. The water here is usually murky, so spinners that create a vibration should work. Flies with some flash and visibility to them might be a good choice. Baits like salmon eggs or Power Bait could also be effective and nightcrawlers have always caught fish here. There are stocked rainbow trout here and some big, wild brown trout. The limit here is two fish per-day

Streamflow in the Chama River below El Vado Dam is 400 cubic-feet-per-second.
