Weather Service Issues Winter Storm Warning

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning through Thursday in the Los Alamos area and other parts of New Mexico.

URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ALBUQUERQUE NM 4:16 AM MST WED JAN 21 2015

...WIDESPREAD SNOW WITH MAJOR IMPACTS TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY...

A PAIR OF UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCES WILL COMBINE WITH A SURFACE COLD FRONT TO PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL OVER A LARGE SWATH OF NEW MEXICO TODAY AND THURSDAY. SNOW WILL DEVELOP THIS MORNING OVER THE MOUNTAINS AND FAR NORTHEAST PLAINS OF NEW MEXICO. SNOW WILL THEN BECOME MORE WIDESPREAD AND INTENSE OVER THE NORTHEASTERN QUADRANT OF THE STATE BY MID DAY...SPREADING FARTHER SOUTH AND WEST TONIGHT AND THURSDAY. SNOW FROM THE CENTRAL MOUNTAIN PEAKS TO THE TEXAS BORDER WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES. SNOW WILL DIMINISH FROM NORTHWEST TO SOUTHEAST LATER THURSDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT.

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 5 PM MST THURSDAY...A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 5 PM MST THURSDAY.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...3 TO 6 INCHES IN THE ESTANCIA...LOWER CHAMA...AND UPPER RIO GRANDE VALLEYS AND SANTA FE METRO AREA...6 TO 10 OVER THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINS...HIGHLANDS AND EASTERN PLAINS. LOCALIZED HIGHER AMOUNTS OF 12 TO 14 INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE IN PORTIONS OF EAST CENTRAL NEW MEXICO.

* TIMING...SNOW WILL BEGIN THIS MORNING AND INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND INTENSITY BY AFTERNOON. SNOW WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES TONIGHT AND THURSDAY MORNING BEFORE DIMINISHING THURSDAY AFTERNOON.

* WINDS...EAST TO NORTHEAST 10 TO 20 MPH EXCEPT LOCALLY 20 TO 30 MPH...RESULTING IN PATCHES OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW...MOSTLY TONIGHT AND THURSDAY.

* SNOW LEVELS...TEMPERATURES WILL BE COLD ENOUGH FOR SNOW AT ALL LOCATIONS BY THIS EVENING.

* LOCAL IMPACTS...SIGNIFICANT SNOWS WILL RESULT IN TREACHEROUS WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS WITH SNOW PACKED AND ICY ROADWAYS. SOME ROADWAYS WILL BECOME IMPASSIBLE AND BE CLOSED. THE VISIBILITIES WILL BE ALSO SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED IN FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW.
