POLITICAL News:

The Los Alamos Daily Post hosted a debate Wednesday at its downtown headquarters for the candidates running for Los Alamos County Sheriff.

Democratic incumbent Marco Lucero faced off against Republican challenger Jaret McDonald. PAC 8 video taped the debate, which can be viewed here.

Lucero, a retired Santa Fe County sheriff, said he:

  • is dedicated to keeping the Los Alamos Sheriffs’ Office a functional and professionally recognized department;
  • will continue to increase the capabilities of the Sheriff’s office;
  • is a strong believer in supporting our constitutional rights;
  • understands the responsibilities and requirements of the position of the elected County Sheriff;
  • is well versed in the laws regarding SORNA (sex offender registration and notification act);
  • is committed to keeping our community safe and improving our quality of life; and
  • believes it is vitally important to work with our youth to help them become productive members of society.

McDonald, a construction superintendent with LANS, said he is running to:

  • ensure the Sheriff’s Office follows the County Charter;
  • not increase or decrease the reach of the Sheriff’s Office without voter/council approval;
  • ensure that all Sheriff’s Office spending is absolutely necessary;
  • ensure all official travel and Sheriff’s Office business is a requirement of the Office; and
  • keep in touch with historical issues and the needs of the community.
