Usually “Senior Skip Day” is a day when high school seniors play hooky. This Thursday, Oct. 8, it will be an opportunity for senior citizens 62 and over, nationwide, to visit National Park units for free.
By inviting senior citizens out to the National Park System, “Senior Skip Day” is being promoted by health-care company Humana, for improving the health of the communities they serve.
“National parks are great resources offering a range of healthy experiences for people of all ages, and they represent an easy way to enjoy being healthy and active,” Humana President/CEO Bruce Broussard said.
Through the National Park Foundation, Humana is the official health care sponsor of the National Park Service Centennial.
Anyone over 62 who is a citizen or permanent resident of the United States is eligible for a Senior Pass, a $10 lifetime pass providing free entry to all federal recreation sites as well as other benefits such as half-price camping in many areas. “Senior Skip Day” is just one day, but those participating in it may also want to purchase a Senior Pass.  Then they can go on to enjoy many more units of the National Park System, as well as areas administered by other federal agencies.

Other passes are available for those who do not qualify for a Senior Pass. The America the Beautiful Annual Pass ($80), the Military Annual Pass (free) for activity military and dependents, the Bandelier Annual Pass ($30), and the Every Kid in a Park Pass (free) for fourth graders are each good for a year. The Access Pass (free) for persons with a disability, like the Senior Pass, is good for the lifetime of the owner.

“We hope lots of seniors will come on out to Bandelier on Senior Skip Day, and then consider getting a Senior Pass so they can come out many more times,” Bandelier Superintendent Jason Lott said. “National park areas belong to everyone, and we hope that people will take advantage of all 400-plus areas to get outside, explore, and enjoy – and especially Bandelier.”
