Due To COVID-19 Public Health Emergency … Veterans Urged To Contact County Assessor On Property Tax Deadlines

NMDVS News:

SANTA FE — Due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency, some counties in New Mexico may have extended the filing deadline for property taxes.

Therefore, the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services (DVS) is urging veterans and unmarried, surviving spouses of veterans who own homes to check with their county assessor’s office for property tax deadlines–and applying for the Veteran Property Tax Exemption.

For your convenience, a contact list of county assessors has been provided below.

Applying for the Veteran Property Tax Exemption

Veterans and unmarried, surviving spouses of veterans who are residents of New Mexico are eligible for the Veteran Property Tax Exemption— which is a $4,000 reduction of the taxable value of their primary residence. When filing for this exemption, the veteran or the unmarried, surviving spouse of a veteran must present a Veterans State Property Tax Exemption Certificate to verify eligibility. Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating are eligible to have their entire property tax liability waived.

During the current public health emergency, those who are eligible to receive the exemption can easily file for this Certificate by submitting an application and supporting documents, via mail or fax, to the DVS administrative office in Santa Fe.  A copy of the application can be found at the DVS website, http://www.nmdvs.org, by clicking on the “Forms” tab at the top of the home page, and then clicking on the “Property Tax Exemption” link at the top.

Completed forms and supporting documents may be mailed to:

  • The New Mexico Department of Veterans Services
  • ATTN: STATE BENEFITS
  • 407 Galisteo St./Room #134
  • Santa Fe, NM  87501

Completed forms and supporting documents may also be faxed to 505.827.6336. DVS will return the certificate and the supporting documents to the requestor.

For questions, call DVS toll-free at 1.(866).433.8387.
