The Parenting University workshop hosted by the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB) and UNM-Los Alamos March 12 generated the largest attendance yet for this popular series.

More than 70 parents, grandparents, caregivers and community members were on hand to hear from internationally acclaimed author and speaker Barbara Coloroso, who presented, “Kids are Worth It! Parenting with Wit & Wisdom.”

In addition, 17 children participated in enrichment activities on campus, while 12 toddlers received child care at the Ark Child Development Center.

This was a community effort, with JJAB providing the funding for the event, Zia Credit Union providing the funding for childcare, and JJAB, the Family Strengths Network, and UNM-LA all working on the promotion of the event.

“Parents were appreciative of the onsite child enrichment activities and the child care for the little ones provided at the Ark Child Development Center,” said Lisa Caldwell, program coordinator for Community Education at UNM-LA.

During the workshop, Coloroso discussed six critical life messages that parents should convey to their children:

  • I believe in you;
  • I trust you;
  • I know you can handle it;
  • You are listened to;
  • You are cared for; and
  • You are very important to me.

She explained these messages at length, providing examples from her own parenting experience and from her work with parents and school organizations over the past 45 years.

Participants enjoyed learning how to create home environments where children can become caring, responsible, and self-disciplined human beings.

Afterwards, one attendee said,  “Barbara Coloroso was beyond fabulous! Her message was timely, pertinent, accessible. Loved her sense of humor!”  “Outstanding workshop. Should be required for all parents,” another said. “I appreciate the quality childcare,” a third said. “Thank you for bringing Mrs. Coloroso here. I appreciate JJAB and UNM-LA for collaborating with the community on parenting solutions,” another attendee said.
