UNM-LA News:

Parenting University, hosted by UNM-LA Community Education and the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board (JJAB), returns Saturday, Nov. 5 with Tool Up for Parenting 2016.

This free workshop is designed to provide parents and caregivers with the practical information they need to raise healthy and well-balanced children, information about community resources, and the opportunity to interact with other families of school-aged children.

In one session, Diane Marasciulo will present True Colors Parenting & the Harmonious Home. Participants will explore the True Colors personality temperament model to determine color spectrums for themselves and their family members. The results will help the audience to identify effective parenting styles, understand family dynamics, deepen relationships, and enhance communication, self-discipline, and self-esteem. Marasciulo, a nationally certified school psychologist, has extensive experience working with children and families.

In another session, Dr. Scott Carroll will present a broad overview of mental health in children. He will discuss how mental illness is diagnosed and treated in children, address disorders that are more prevalent in children, cover emerging treatments, and let parents know when they should be concerned and seek professional help. Dr. Carroll is an associate professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the UNM School of Medicine.

“We are thrilled to be working with JJAB again to provide this type of high-quality program for families in Los Alamos and White Rock,” said Gabe Baca, UNM-LA Community Education Program Manager. “The speakers are engaging and informative and the workshop creates a supportive family environment with plenty of opportunities for parents to network, as well as activities for children.”

The workshop is at UNM-LA in Building 2 beginning 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. with sign-in and a light breakfast. The presentations runs 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with mid-morning refreshments served between sessions.
