UWNNM News:

United Way of Northern New Mexico’s (UWNNM) Board of Directors and staff hosts an Economic Development Summit for prominent Los Alamos leadership and Gov. Michelle Lujan-Grisham, Friday Oct. 7, at the Los Alamos Nature Center to discuss the necessity and success of area nonprofits.

Participants of the Economic Development Summit included Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) representatives and LANL subcontractor agencies N3B, Merrick & Co., TechSource, Inc., Hacienda Homes, Pebble Labs, Longenecker & Associates and Los Alamos County elected leaders.

Gov. Lujan-Grisham spoke about the economic positioning of northern New Mexico cities, the vital role nonprofits such as UWNNM are playing, and how continued support from donors will help them build a better and brighter future.

“This particular organization’s history and work in the north, and its relationship to other private sector or quasi-public sector partners, like Los Alamos, creates the unique opportunities where we really are going to solve complex problems,” she said.

The Governor continued by describing the success UWNNM has had in shrinking food insecurity and providing education and housing opportunities for many cities in northern New Mexico.

UWNNM Board President Liddie Martinez, Board member Steve Renfro and Executive Director Monica Griego spoke at the event.

Griego detailed UWNNM’s efforts to fund 28 nonprofit organizations and its creating new programs to assist northern New Mexico residents.

“We did $475,000 of investments in our priority areas. Senior services and transportation, food assistance, housing, behavioral health, and family supports, youth education and mentoring … our donors are committed to our mission, and they believe in the work we do,” Griego said.

Griego spoke about UWNNM’s goal of surpassing last year’s donations with efforts to raise $500,000 by the end of this year in support of nonprofits. After raising $402,000 so far, the goal is within reach, she said.

As UWNNM continues to serve communities from Los Alamos and Rio Arriba counties to the Colorado border, Griego encourages individuals to volunteer, donate or contact them at https://unitedwaynnm.org.
