Unitarian Church Hosts Free Screening of Nebraska to Kick Off ‘Summer Blockbusters’ Movie Sermon Series

UNITARIAN CHURCH News:

  • Unitarian Church hosts Dinner and a Movie Night to kick off “Summer Blockbusters” Movie Sermon Series

Rev. John Cullinan of the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos kicks off his “Summer Blockbusters” sermon series this weekend, July 12 and 13.

Since 2009, Rev. Cullinan has preached on important themes in popular (and sometimes not-so-popular) movies. Past sermons have been based on movies such as Avatar, Super 8, The Help, and Hugo.

This weekend, Rev. Cullinan kicks off the 2014 Summer Blockbusters series with a sermon on themes of forgiveness and family relationships in the Oscar nominated movie Nebraska.

The Unitarian church will host a free screening of  the 2013 Oscar-nominated film, beginning at 7 p.m. This black and white road trip drama stars Bruce Dern as a tempestuous Missouri father who’s convinced he’s won a million dollar magazine sweepstakes, and Will Forte as the son who grudgingly agrees to drive him to Nebraska to claim his winnings. The movie earned Oscar nominations for Dern and co-star June Squibb, as well as Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. The movie is rated R for language.

Child care is available for the Saturday evening event.

Sunday, July 13, Rev. Cullinan will share a sermon based on themes in the movie. All are welcome to join us for Sunday Worship. The service begins at 10:30 a.m. and children’s religious education takes place during the service.

Three more “Blockbusters” sermons will be presented in the coming weeks:

  • Gravity on Sunday, July 27th
  • Frozen on Sunday, August 10th
  • Wajda on Sunday, August 24th

The Unitarian Church of Los Alamos is at 1738 N. Sage St. The church office can be reached at 505.662.2346. For more information, visit www.uulosalamos.org.
