WASHINGTON, D.C. ― U.S. Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement after Iran announced it would exceed uranium enrichment levels previously agreed to under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The news comes just over one year after the Trump administration withdrew the United States from the JCPOA and started its “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, including the restarting of crippling economic sanctions that had been reversed in exchange for nuclear program limits in the JCPOA.
“This is the dangerous and predictable consequence of the president withdrawing the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal. Now we are stumbling to the brink of war without the support of our allies. Congress must step up and prevent an unconstitutional war with Iran and avert one of the biggest foreign policy blunders in decades,” Udall said.
Late last week, Udall filed a bipartisan amendment to the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to prohibit funds from being used for military operations against Iran without explicit authorization from Congress. The amendment is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.). Udall has also introduced bipartisan legislation to prevent an unconstitutional war with Iran.
