SPORTS AND RECREATION News:
If there is any question about the seriousness of tennis in Los Alamos, just see that four local players, Bob Nolen, Richard Henderson, John Gregory and Merete Nieto, played Monday morning in 20 degree weather at Pinon Courts in White Rock.
There are about 25 retired adults who play three times a week. They alternate between Los Alamos and White Rock.
The Los Alamos Tennis Club sponsors United States Tennis Association (USTA) competitive teams. In fact, the 3.5 rated team coached by Joel Williams just won the Northern New Mexico Division at Urban Park in Los Alamos. They will play in the USTA Sectional Playoffs in Arizona in May 2017.
All area tennis players should attend the Los Alamos County Council’s Bond Projects 2017 presentation at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 20, in Council Chambers. Another big need is for the high school to have eight courts in one location so they can host their district championships. The four courts being proposed at the John F. Kennedy Memorial will give them that including the four at West Mesa Park, in addition, this will allow the USTA teams to hold their five matches without the need for one of the teams to travel to another court other than Urban.
