‘Trauma Rocks’ Workshop Presented At UNM-LA

UNM-LA News:

UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA), in collaboration with TEWA Women United V.O.I.C.E.S. (Valuing Our Integrity with Courage, Empowerment and Support), invites the community to a workshop that explores the complicated historical and cultural environment of Northern New Mexico, and addresses the effects of the intergenerational trauma of sexual violence.

The workshop, called “Trauma Rocks,” is 1:30-3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, in Building 2, Room 230 on the UNM-LA Campus, 4000 University Dr. Refreshments will be served.

The trauma of sexual violence affects not only those who directly experience it, but also subsequent generations. Statistics show that one in three Native women will experience sexual assault in their lifetime. Across the United States, one in five women and one in sixteen men will experience sexual assault while in college. This workshop is intended to educate participants on how this trauma affects the community as a whole. Through a series of guided exercises, participants will cultivate awareness of behavior patterns which may develop as a reaction to this trauma, and that may interfere with their own success.

“Trauma Rocks” will be facilitated by Beverly Billie, Community Well-being coordinator with TEWA Women United V.O.I.C.E.S. She is from Acoma and Taos Pueblos with experience in healing interventions and experiential programming. Tewa Women United is a culturally-based organization responding to sexual violence and related trauma in diverse communities located in Rio Arriba, northern Santa Fe counties and the Pueblo and Tribal Nations in New Mexico. The V.O.I.C.E.S. program offers training, community outreach and educational events, helping-the-helper sessions, and cultural competency/sensitivity trainings.

This event is made possible by a grant awarded to UNM-LA by the Office of Violence Against Women (OVW). The UNM-LA OVW Campus Grant provides funding over three years to organize effective sexual violence prevention, education and response for communities in northern New Mexico.
