Not many games go as swimmingly as you expect, but the two wins the Topper teams shared over the Scorpions sure seemed like a walk in the park.
The first set of the two wins was the JV game in which the boys wheeled past Moriarty with a 26 point win. The boy’s lost their advantage at times but kept a comfortable lead during most of the game. Although the Scorpions defeat was partially due to the low field goal percentage, the Toppers constant rebounds and defensive turnovers ultimately led to their success. The Toppers looked replenished after their first loss to Valencia last week, picking up the pace and sealing down the game. They looked over-the-moon after their first win this season. This will be a fantastic transition into their next game this week.
The Varsity crew’s success over Moriarty helped them reach a record of 2-0. The Toppers came out with a stacked lineup, including Jack Stewart, Adam Paulson, Ramon Roybal, Isaac Fason, and Michael Trujillo. The Toppers did not have as simple as a first half as the JV, but they did finish with a 2-point lead going into the second.
Head Coach Michael Kluk must have offered an inspirational speech during the half-time because the Toppers came out blasting with a full-court press and dissembled the Scorpions defense in the second half. The Toppers did suffer an injury scare when Stewart fell on his ankle. With players like Antonio Trujillo and Kirk Peterson also being injured, it could be a possible blow to their season. With ease in the last two quarters, the Toppers scored enough points leading them to a routine win 62-37.
The Topper guys look on top after two home wins and leading to their first away game on Friday at St. Michael’s High School.
Afterward Stewart said, ”We struggled in the first half but got together in the second. Luckily I only twisted my ankle and I should be back soon.” Now that key players are returning the Toppers can hopefully find another win past the Horseman to improve to 3-0.
