SPORTS News:

Tuesday night the 8-9 Hilltopper boys basketball team played host to the 8-8 Del Norte Knights.

The Toppers were playing without the services of Michael Naranjo, one of their leading scorers. Michael had to sit out because of a concussion protocol.

The game was closely contested. The score was tied at 13 all after the first quarter and the Knights led by 2, 27-25 at half. The Toppers took the lead in the 3 rd quarter making the score 41-38 after 3 quarters. The lead see-sawed in the fourth quarter. Jack Stewart put the Toppers ahead 47-46 with about 5 minutes to go, but Vincent Goodman returned the favor putting the Knights ahead 48-47 at the 4:40 mark, a lead they never relinquished. The final score was 65-62 in favor of the Knights.

Junior Troy Hammock played an excellent game for the Toppers leading in scoring with 18 points. Ramon Roybal, a 5’4” junior guard, was second with 13 points.

Cade Gasway, a 6’8” senior post was the Toppers leading rebounder with 7 rebounds. The Toppers missed a number of “bunnies”, close-in shots that failed to drop.

The Knights were not a tall team, but they were very quick and hustled. They were led in scoring by Daniel Flores with 23 points. Co-captain Vincent Goodman had 14 points.

Next Friday the boys travel to Albuquerque to play the 4-10 Academy Chargers in a district game. The boys then come home to face the 9-10 Roswell Goddard Rockets Saturday afternoon.

The sports fans were more than entertained by ‘Mr. Z’s Pep Band’ that played during the Del Norte basketball game Tuesday in Griffith Gym. LAHS band director Zane Meek was at the helm. Photo by John McHale/ladailypost.com
