A sweep of the district trial against the Española Valley Sundevils and Del Norte Knights on Wednesday afternoon in Griffith Gymnasium earned the Los Alamos Hilltopper Wrestling team the outright district 2-5A title.

In the first set, Del Norte and Española Valley faced off with the Knights, easily winning with a point total of 57-18. The Knights’ and Hilltoppers’ set was much more competitive and came down to the very last match to decide the winner.

Dylan Irish (182 pounds) opened up the day earning a pin for 6 points. Arturo Rodriguez (220) and Devin Atencio (106) earned 6 points apiece by forfeit since the Knights didn’t have anyone to wrestle. Damien Gonzalez (120) went the distance, earning 3 points in a 16-11 decision.

Trevor Brown (145) picked up a pin 43 seconds into the first round to grab 6 points. Reyes Mendez (152) nabbed 3 points in a 9-3 decision, and Lewis Harvey (170) clinched the set pinning his opponent with 21 seconds left in the 3 rd round. Los Alamos beat Del Norte by a 36-30 point total.

The ‘Toppers had no trouble beating Española Valley by a 66-15 point total. The Sundevils only had seven competitors.

“We knew Del Norte would be a tight match and it came down to the last match,” Head Coach James Hatt said after the trial. “Can’t say enough about my guys, they persevered. They pushed through and they won.”

“We’ve had a lot of success this season,” Hatt added. “We’ve beat everyone in our district. We have a good team, they’re looking good and I’m proud of them.”
