Tuesday evening the Hilltopper volleyball team played host to the Pojoaque Elkettes. With buckets of rain falling outside, Griffith Gym was warm and very humid inside.

Momentum plays a big role in volleyball and the Toppers had trouble getting “big mo” to move to their side of the net. Volleyball is also very much a teamwork sport and the Toppers were playing without two senior regulars.

The Elkettes started strong winning the first set 25-15 keyed by a 5-point surge beginning at 9-5. The Toppers were much more respectable in the second set even leading at 16-15; however, Pojoaque’s Alyssa Rodriguez served four straight winning points and Toppers fell 25-21.

Led by strong serving by Kaitlin Bennett and Gabriela Vallejos the Toppers led most of the way and won the third set 25-14. The Elkettes rallied for a fourth set victory behind the serving of Analisa Lovato. The final score was 25-18. Seniors Ellie Hayward and Kaitlin Bennett led the Toppers in kills with nine each. Sophomore Sophia Salazar had 8 kills for the Toppers.

Thursday evening the Toppers travel to play at Saint Michael’s. The next home volleyball action is Saturday of homecoming weekend when they host Rio Grande.
