Fresh off their 68 to 16 rout of the Albuquerque High Bulldogs, the Class 6A Volcano Vista Hawks visited Griffith Gym Saturday night looking for an easy win over the Class 5A Toppers.

Instead they were met by Coach Nestor Trujillo’s team of determined and hustling Topper girls. Lisa Villareal’s Hawks were athletic and deep in talent. Volcano Vista led by 7 at halftime, but when the Toppers closed the lead to only 4 points in the third quarter, Coach Villareal was forced to call time out.

The Hawks dominated the foul-plagued Toppers in the fourth quarter outscoring the Toppers 15 to 4 and winning 61 to 43.

The Toppers held guard Doezha Battle, their leading scorer to 13 points, but 5’10” senior center, Raven Herrera, led the Hawks in scoring with 20 points. She also had 9 rebounds.

The Toppers were led by their Dynamic Duo of Kayla Salazar and Ashlynn Trujillo. They scored 22 and 14 points respectively. The third Topper returning starter, Ashley Logan, was saddled with three quick fouls and eventually fouled out without scoring. Makaela Jones, the Toppers 5’10” post, led the team in rebounds with 8.

Next action for the Topper girls is an away non-conference game with Albuquerque’s Hope Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8.
