At 8 a.m. sharp Saturday the Hilltopper boys varsity soccer team met the Valencia Jaguars in the semifinal match of the Louie Cernicek Memorial Tournament. The Toppers scored first in the 21st minute with a goal by midfielder Tristen Semelsberger. There was no more scoring in the first half, which ended with a 1-nil score in the Toppers favor.

The Toppers defended this thin margin until the 68th minute when Daniel Calderon scored for the Jaguars knotting the score at one all. The Toppers pressured the Jaguar goalie, but he made 11 saves to force overtime.

There was no scoring in the first 5-minute overtime. Late in the second overtime Hilltopper forward Arthur Steinkamp scored from the right side with a “Golden Goal” and the match was over. The Toppers were scheduled to meet the other semifinal winner, the Roswell Coyotes, at 6 p.m., but the drenching monsoons forced postponement of the championship match until later in September.
