New State Parks Director Toby Velasquez

SANTA FE — Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) Cabinet Secretary Sarah Cottrell Propst has announced Toby Velasquez is the new director of the State Parks Division, effective immediately.

Velasquez previously served as the deputy director of State Parks, and has a 23-year career in the State Parks Division.

“Mr. Velasquez’s wealth of experience and knowledge is a tremendous asset to EMNRD and the State Parks Division,” Secretary Cottrell Propst said. “Our State Parks already provide wonderful recreational opportunities to every New Mexican and visitor to our great state, and I’m looking forward to working with Mr. Velasquez to kick it up to the next level.”

Velasquez began his State Parks career as a seasonal employee in 1991 and has held a number of positions in the Division, including park ranger, park manager, and regional manager. As deputy director, he was able to instill the values he holds dear in the next generation of State Parks employees. His experience with, knowledge of, and devotion to the New Mexico State Parks system make him an ideal leader for the State Parks Division.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve the State Parks Division as its new Director,” Velasquez said. “Our incredible employees inspire me every day, and I know that we will continue to accomplish great things together in the future.”

State Parks welcomes five million people each year to 35 locations across the state, and provides a wide variety of recreational and educational opportunities for New Mexicans and visitors alike. Visit for more information.
