‘Tis the Season…for Giving and Giving Thanks!

By Steven Thomas, Library Manager
Los Alamos County Library System

Los Alamos County Libraries are very fortunate indeed to have many volunteers who help staff members with all kinds of tasks. In the spirit of the season, these folks give their time and energy generously.

Several of our most popular programs could only happen with ongoing, reliable support and some volunteers have been giving to our libraries and the community year after year, some for over a decade!

Library staff would like to specially thank our ‘film guys’, Thad Hahn and Phil Klingner, who had the idea to create the Mesa Public Library FREE Film Series back in 2003: it is still going strong, coming up on the 11th year, and still showing great movies once a month. They not only give their expertise in helping to choose films but also in advising staff on the best equipment choices and with running the series, hands on, each month. They have both spent many hours providing this great series to our community – Thank You, Thad and Phil!

Jane Lin, local poet and teacher, has also hosted a library program, Poetry Gatherings, single handedly for over a decade since its inception in October 2003. This informal group was established for anyone who loves poetry either as a reader, listener, or writer and Jane makes all poetry lovers welcome each month, offering feedback on new work, reading suggestions, and connections to other poets and poetry resources in our libraries and online. She has also organized and acted as master of ceremonies for our annual celebration of National Poetry Month each April. Thank You, Jane!

A more recent transplant to Los Alamos, Ginny White has already made a huge difference as a volunteer for many cultural and community groups in the few years she has been here. Los Alamos County Libraries count themselves as very fortunate to have Ginny as a volunteer member of many program planning efforts as well as the coordinator of the newly formed Literary Locals series.

Most recently, Los Alamos was treated to a memorable afternoon with authors Valerie Plame and Sarah Lovett, thanks to Ginny’s initiative. She had the opportunity to meet Valerie Plame at a political event and bravely asked her to consider speaking at Mesa Public Library’s Authors Speak Series. When Plame agreed, the result was the standout event on Dec. 8!

Both Mesa Public Library and White Rock Branch Library have many volunteers and we thank them all for all they give to make our libraries ever better. The Friends of Los Alamos County Libraries help to make all of these programs possible as well as providing support for many library services.
