By JIM O’DONNELLThis Friday we are opening The 33. The Good Dinosaur, Mockingjay, Part 2, and Krampus (by the way it’s definitely an off-beat Christmas film but it’s also funny, entertaining and scary.) will hold for another week.
Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens opens Thursday, Dec. 17. Tickets are now on sale at our box office.
Now is the season for many excellent films to open limited in theaters just before the end of the year in the hopes they will be nominated Jan. 14, 2016. The 88th Academy Awards ceremony is Feb. 28, 2016.
These films tend to be more dramatic, adult oriented, films with outstanding scores, sound effects, screen plays and performances. I say “tend to” because that is the trend but not the rule. Remember we had The Martian back in October and The Good Dinosaur is playing now. Over the summer we had Inside Out, Jurassic World and The Peanut Movie.
Unfortunately, as I said, most of these films are opening limited and we cannot get them on the “break” in our small town but we’ll certainly play them as soon as we can get them. The limited release films I’ve already asked for are as follows: The Heart of the Sea, Brooklyn, Spotlight, Trumbo, Room, The Revenant, The Big Short, Suffragette, Carol, and 45 Years. Our Christmas films are narrowed down to Concussion, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Star Wars, and Daddy’s Home. Joy, Point Break, and Sisters are maybes at best.

The 33: The true story of the 2010 collapses of a Chilean mine and the rescue of the 33 miners who were trapped underground for 69 days.
Krampus, which opens Friday is a film which combines horror, comedy, and fantasy starring Adam Scott of “Parks and Recreation,” “Anchorman’s” David Koechner, and Toni Collette. Krampus is a goat-like demon punishes those who are bad unlike Santa who rewards those who are good. From Germanic roots he traditionally visits homes on Dec. 5, which happens to be this Saturday. So I suggest stay at home and lock your doors or go to the movies to laugh and get scared senseless. Few reviews are out yet, but some think this will become a cult-like Xmas movie. Dare or beware…
