ART News:

The Mad Hatter Gallery’s upcoming exhibit, “Eleos – Acknowledgement of Others”, showcases new and exclusive work by Las Cruces Artist Chris Kemler, on view Oct. 3 through Nov. 22.

Inspired by the Goddess Eleos, who in Greek mythology symbolizes mercy and compassion, “Eleos – Acknowledgement of Others” includes several never-before-seen works by Chris Kemler, including work that was exclusively created for the exhibit.

“In this exhibit, Kemler invites viewers to explore the theme of acknowledgement of others, emphasizing that true acknowledgement isn’t about giving kudos – it’s about genuine respect and acceptance of people for who they are,” Director Penny Peace said. “The exhibit also reminds us of the importance of the distinct but interconnected principle of ‘Know Thyself’ challenging viewers to also examine who they are alongside their acceptance of others.”

Chris Kemler, a contemporary artist born in Lawrence, Kan., now residing in Las Cruces, creates tactile wooden artworks that challenge viewers’ perceptions of material and form. Prior to moving to Las Cruces, Chris focused on his furniture craft, winning awards at the Texas Furniture Makers Show in 2010 and 2011 and was included in Craft Texas 2012 at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Kemler was selected as a 2025 SURFACE emerging artist by the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque.

“Eleos – Acknowledgement of Others” will be on view Oct. 3 through Nov. 22, with an artist reception, 5-8 p.m. Oct. 3, and an artist talk and champagne and chocolate reception 5:30-6:30 p.m. Nov. 7.

The Mad Hatter Gallery at 221 N. Main St., Suite C, focuses exclusively on contemporary art and is committed to artistic and creative freedom. The gallery is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, with extended hours on First Fridays and for other events.
