The 20/20 Campaign Recognizes Eight High Growth Companies in Northern New Mexico

Eight companies were announced on Thursday, Oct. 4 at the Spirit of Innovation event in Santa Fe as part of the 20/20 Campaign to celebrate small businesses in Northern New Mexico. The event will be held at the Scottish Rite Temple from 6 to 8 p.m. The 20/20 Campaign aims to recognize and support 20 high-growth companies by the year 2020 that are becoming major employers in Northern New Mexico. Together the companies in the 2012 class employ around 270 people and have combined revenues of over $59 million.

Collaborating partners will select a handful of businesses each year. Partners include service providers, economic development organizations, city and county governments and entrepreneurial support organizations serving Española, Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Taos. Each company chosen for the 2012 class of the 20/20 Campaign had to have a proven and developed product or service, two or more customers, and demonstrate financial stability and profitability.

Companies had to have made progress toward being able to double revenue and staffing over eight years, and they had to be manufacturing or producing a product with at least 50 percent or more of revenues or customer base outside of Northern New Mexico. In addition, they had to be committed to staying and growing in Northern New Mexico.

Nominees accepted each year as 20/20 businesses will receive business resources — including operational, financial and technical support — from service providers with the aim of helping each double its revenue and work force over the following four years.

The selected 20/20 companies will have the opportunity to participate in a “springboard” event organized by Connect — the principal economic development investment of Los Alamos National Security LLC, which is the contract operations manager of Los Alamos National Laboratory for the Department of Energy.

A springboard event helps companies face and understand options to solve a strategic decision, such as securing funding, verifying a business model, building a management team or penetrating a new market.

The following companies were named as the 2012 class of the 20/20 Campaign: 
Bicycle Technologies International (BTI): Santa Fe, NM – BTI is a full service distributor of bike parts and components. Preston Martin and Andrew Wright founded BTI in 1993 in Ashland Oregon and setup operations in Santa Fe in 1996. Their customers include over 3,500 bike shops around the country.
Black Mesa Winery: Velarde, NM – Black Mesa winery was bought by current owners Jerry and Lynda Burd in 2000. In addition to making their own wine and selling it under the Black Mesa label, they are the winemakers for the several other New Mexico wineries, and vineyards. They produce and bottle approximately 10,000 cases of wine a year. Just recently Black Mesa won a Double Gold medal at the Indy International Wine Competition for their Antelope ’09 Red wine, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It was also awarded Best of Class for its Bordeaux blend.
Performance Maintenance Inc (PMI): Espanola, NM – PMI, Inc. was founded by Eric and Celina Quintana in 1994. It began as residential and commercial cleaning company in Espanola and has diversified to include a green cleaning system being marketed nationwide. Their green solutions system uses only environmentally certified products, reduces the amount of packaging sent to landfills, utilizes recycled paper products, and operates equipment with less environmental impact. The demand has rapidly grown for PMI products so the company has outgrown its existing warehouse facility and is looking to expand into a new facility in Espanola.  
Positive Energy: Santa Fe, NM – Allan Sindelar, Chief Technology Office, founded Positive Energy 1997 in Santa Fe. Since then, it has grown to 50 people with offices in Las Cruces, Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos. The current CEO, Regina Wheeler, joined the company in 2011 to help accelerate the company’s growth. Positive Energy is a solar integrator providing comprehensive, high quality solar solutions for homes and businesses.  Positive Energy makes solar accessible to all by providing financing and expert management of the installation process. They are a triple bottom line company; contribute to the community through educational programs, grants, policy advocacy and offsetting 100% of their carbon footprint.
Santa Fe Brewing Company: Santa Fe, NM – The brewery was founded in 1988 but was bought by Brian Lock and three other partners in 1996. Brian took over as sole owner in 2004. Santa Fe Brewing Company is on track to produce to 15,000 barrels a year of 10 different high-end, craft beers which are distributed in New Mexico and to a growing number of states in the region including Texas, Colorado, Arizona, and Oklahoma. Currently, 40% of their sales are out of state and they are on track to increase their revenues by 35% in 2012.
Siriusware: Taos, NM – Founded in 1989 by CEO Mark Danemann, Siriusware provides clients with software and hardware for point of sale services in ticketing and admission systems that deliver the essential features required in a customizable, integrated Enterprise Solution. In 2012, Inc. magazine named Siriusware as one of the 5,000 fastest-growing companies in the country.
Star Cryoelectronics: Santa Fe, NM – Star Cryoelectronics was founded in 1999 by Robin Cantor and designs and manufactures high tech sensors and control electronics.  These products have applications in biomedical imaging, basic laboratory research, geophysics (mining and mineral exploration) and non-destructive testing of materials for quality assurance. Over fifty percent of their sales are international and Star Cryoelectronics is one of five companies in the world producing this kind of advanced equipment.
Vapour Organic Beauty: Taos, NM – Vapour Organic Beauty: Taos, NM – The company was founded in 2009 by Krysia Boinis, Kristine Keheley and Eric Sakas and manufactures and distributes a full line of high performance organic cosmetics. Vapour grew 49% from 2010 to 2011 distributing throughout the United States and Canada and the company is working with several potential retail partners in Europe and Japan.
