‘Tee Off For Ted’ Memorial Golf Tournament June 10

Ted Lopez

COMMUNITY News:

The “Tee Off For Ted” Memorial Golf Tournament is June 10 at Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe in tribute and memory of Ted Lopez; proud Navy veteran, University of New Mexico (UNM) alumnus and former director of the UNM-LA Small Business Development Center.

All proceeds will benefit establishing a Ted S. Lopez Memorial Scholarship at the University of New Mexico, in support of veterans.

In honor of Ted Lopez’s passion for life-learning, desire for veteran opportunities and commitment to the UNM community, his family is establishing the Ted S. Lopez Memorial scholarship, which intends to assist veterans attending UNM. Once endowed, the Lopez family will continue to work with the UNM Veteran’s Resource Center and UNM Foundation to determine the areas of need and how to best utilize the fund to support UNM veterans.

This effort enables individuals to support in potentially three different ways:

Playing in the golf tournament (18-hole or nine-hole course);

Attending the tournament luncheon; or

Donating to the cause.

“Tee Off For Ted” is a tournament for all golfers, at all skill levels. The format is a four-person team scramble.

“This event highlights education, service to others and comradery – all in which my dad valued and instilled in my brothers and me,” Lopez’s daughter Kathryn Lopez said. “Around this time a year ago, family and friends came together to celebrate his life. So this year we welcome and encourage people to gather together to celebrate his legacy. My father cherished his time in the Navy, his UNM graduate school experience and deeply enjoyed serving the Los Alamos community as the SBDC director. My mother, brothers and I are doing this tournament in tribute to a man who positively impacted countless people throughout his life. Our goal is that through this scholarship in his name, ‘he’ would then be enabled to continue to make a difference in the lives of so many more … just from heaven now.”

Lopez served the country as a communications officer on the USS Anchorage LSD-36 ship during the Vietnam conflict. Nearly 40 years after being in the service, he pursued his Executive MBA from the University of New Mexico’s Anderson School of Management. At the age of 64 he walked across that graduation stage and earned his master’s degree, receiving a standing ovation from his classmates, who had given him a “Most Likely to say something nice about you to make your day” award.

As director of the Small Business Development Center at UNM-Los Alamos where he consulted and mentored New Mexico business clients, Lopez was a devoted man. He was devoted to his family, friends, commitments and serving others. His strength, courage, sense of gratitude, faith and love of God and country remain an inspiration to those who knew him.

Throughout life, Lopez prioritized creating special moments and memories for his wife, children and those around him. So, the Lopez family invites everyone to celebrate veterans, the Lobos, and enjoy themselves, all while make a lasting impact in the community by participating in the 2017 “Tee Off for Ted” Memorial Tournament!
