Elizabeth Laskey of Los Alamos ended her career being named Teacher of the Year in 2018.

She was a special education teacher at Mountain Elementary School. Laskey started her career as a teacher at Aspen Elementary School. She taught in the district for 11 years and retired in 2018.

The subjects that she taught as a special ed teacher were reading, written expression and math. She also worked with students with autism and behavioral needs.

Laskey said that the experience made her look through the eyes of a child instead of an adult. Part of Laskey’s success was working as a team with not only other special education teachers but also the principal and district administration, general education teachers, physical and occupational therapist, clinical staff and especially the speech/language pathologist.

“It is such an honor to be awarded the teacher of the year … it’s a great way to end my career,” Laskey said.

Laskey and her husband Ray Laskey plan to continue residing in Los Alamos.
