TAOS—Taos Pueblo is one of 20 nominees vying for votes in USA Today’s 10 Best Reader’s Choice awards for the “Best Native American Experience” in the United States.

Votes will be accepted online at 10best.com/awards/travel/best-native-american-experience through at 11:59 a.m. EDT, Sept. 15.

Taos Pueblo is one of only five New Mexico destinations that made the list. Others include Acoma Pueblo; Gathering of Nations PowWow in Albuquerque; Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque; and Santa Fe Indian Market in Santa Fe.

In April 2014, Taos Pueblo was named as one of CNN’s top picks for “Best Places to Experience Native American Culture.” The Town of Taos also was recently named by USA Today as its #1 best August destination in the entire world.

Taos Pueblo is the only living Native American community to be designated both a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a National Historic Landmark. Taos Pueblo has several must-see sacred feast days throughout the year that celebrate Catholic patron saints and are open to the public, including San Geronimo Day Sept. 29-30.

Traditional dances, food and cultural celebrations on feast days offer a glimpse into the Pueblo’s past. Taos Pueblo artists use clay from the Sangre de Cristo mountains for their micaceous pottery, and local dirt to mud their adobe pueblos. Guided tours are available. Photography is not allowed during religious ceremonies. Visit taospueblo.com for details.

Visit 10best.com/awards/travel/best-native-american-experience to vote for Taos Pueblo. The public can vote once per day, per category.
