Los Alamos Hilltopper Standouts Jared And Conner Mang Are Now Standouts For UNM Lobos

Jared Mang, a former Topper baseball star, has been playing for the University of New Mexico Lobos baseball team for the past four years as starter in the outfield. For the 2019 season, Jared has been named captain of the team. His goal is to lead the team to a Mountain West Title by demonstrating through example. He has great expectations for the team and said he believes the team has the potential to succeed. In the 2018 season, cut short by an injury, Mang was selected to the All Conference First Team for the MW. He also was named to the pre-season All-Mountain West Team.

Pajarito Is Open For President’s Day Today

Pajarito is open for President’s Day today and Open Snow is calling for 23” of new snow in the next five days with 4” in the next 24 hours.

Pajarito will re-open Wednesday through Sunday. Refer to the Pajarito Snow Report for the most up-to-date information on what trails and lifts are open. This report is updated at 6 a.m. daily.

Lift ticket prices are valid through March 18th.

High Flyers To Host Dreamcatcher Invitational

Gymnastics fans can see the best female competitors in the state in action later this month when High Flyers Gymnastics hosts the Dreamcatcher Invitational.
Scheduled for Feb. 22-24 at the Santa Fe Convention Center, the annual gymnastics meet draws young women from across the state and region to compete for individual and team honors. This year’s meet will start Friday night and continue throughout the weekend, ending late Sunday afternoon.

Los Alamos Slam Basketball tryouts and meeting for girls and boys in grades fourth through eighth is 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 at Griffith Gymnasium.

High school and SLAM coaches will be there to discuss the upcoming season. Los Alamos Slam is supported by the Hilltopper Basketball Association.

There were several days recently with strong winds. This time of the year the wind can be a major factor when it comes to fishing lakes that have not frozen over. It pays to check on the weather if you are planning a fishing trip. It can be spring one day and winter the next.
More lakes will open to fishing March 1 in Northeast New Mexico. The Charette Lakes, Clayton Lake and Maxwell Lake 13 will open for fishing.
Morphy Lake State Park near Mora has been closed for months for repairs on the dam.

The Topper swimmers check the heat sheets to get their event and lane assignment prior to the meet and write them on their arms and legs as notes. The Topper boy's team scored 564 points to win their side of the meet and the girl's scored 643 points to win theirs. There were 16 State Qualifying times posted from this meet. The girls amassed 643 points to double runner-up Santa Fe Prep’s 289 points in the team standings.

Los Alamos Atomic Tumblers from Los Alamos School of Gymnastics on North Mesa opened their 2019 competitive season in January at G Force gymnastics on Albuquerque’s west side.
One hundred and fifty gymnasts from nine teams across New Mexico and Texas competed in the Xcel competition.
Both Los Alamos Atomic Tumblers Diamond and Platinum teams won first in the team competition.

Topper Hockey Team Beats Telluride Miners 5-1

John Charles takes a shot on goalie Caleb Hobbs in the third game of a four game series played at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink last weekend. This game was played against the Telluride Miners. The Toppers won 5-1. They also won the first game against the Miners 6-5 and two games against the team from Durango, completing their weekend sweep. These wins and a very sucessful season of 12-2-2, put the Toppers at the top of the charts in the New Mexico Division of the Rio Grand Hockey League. These games played in Los Alamos close out the home games for the season.

American Center Alex Kirk (211-C-91, agency: Pensack Sports) of Los Alamos, put on an amazing game in the last round for Toyota Alvark, receiving a Interperformances Player of the Week award for round 37. 

The 27-year-old player had a double-double of 25 points and 14 rebounds, while his team beat Fukuoka Rizing (#5, 9-29) 69-59. Toyota Alvark maintains the 3rd position in their group in Japanese B League. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season.

Sundevils Top Toppers At Home

The Toppers make a grand entry Tuesday night in Griffith Gymnasium to play a game against the Espanola Sundevils. Brian Irwin leads the team onto the court for one of the toughest games of the season. These two have been battling each other for a very long time. The games are always very competitive and physical. The Sundevils are known for playing a very fast brake game, which is hard to defend.
