Superbowl Sunday is the United States’ second biggest day for food consumption. That means a lot of time is spent planning and preparing game day snacks. Before you kick off your menu, look at these tips for safer cooking from the Los Alamos Fire Department.

“Cooking is the biggest cause of home fire and fire injuries,” Safety Division Chief Joseph Baca said. “Always make safety a priority in the kitchen.”


Prepare your cooking area. Use back burners or turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Move things that can burn away from the stove.

Topper Hockey Team Wins Big On Home Ice

Topper Girls Drop A Game To The Bears

The Topper Girls let out a final ‘Yahoo!’ before their game against the La Cueva Bears in Griffith Gymnasium Saturday night. The Bears are a 5A team and ranked high in the poles so the Toppers had their work cut out for themselves. The Toppers played even with the Bears in the first quarter mainly due to Becca Green’s hot streak of 10 points. Southwest Nordic Ski Club and Ski Kids group began the season with the Thanksgiving Nordic Ski Camp in Crested Butte, Colo.

More than 50 people from the club went up for the events with 18 adults taking clinics, nine Ski Kids in the kids camp and three Ski Kids in the junior training camp.

Los Alamos Lacrosse Online Registration Opens

Registration for the Los Alamos Youth Lacrosse Spring 2019 season is now open at
Teams are forming for high school boys, high school girls, and youth (co-ed). There will be no in-person registration this year.
Base fee is $160 for high school players and includes the required US Lacrosse membership fee. High school boys also pay $25 for a uniform. Players may request equipment and pay the rental fee during online registration.
The season begins Feb. 4 for high school boys and girls. Season start for youth is TBD.

All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.
The local competition is 1-3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 27, at Los Alamos High School Griffith Gymnasium. Registration is free of charge and will be held onsite beginning at 12:30 p.m., on the date of the event.

Snow was a novelty to Regele as a kid, but in late high school and college he became interested in rock climbing and mountaineering.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN Twenty-three high school coaches from across the country have been selected as 2018 National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association.
The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers), and in two “other” sports (one for boys and one for girls) that are not included in the top 10 listings. The NFHS also recognizes a Spirit coach as a separate category.

Pajarito Mountain Ski Area is open for Wednesday-Sunday operations, but this week also is open Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Lift ticket prices are valid through March 18. Prices are $49 for adults (ages 18-59), $39 for teens (ages 13-18), $39 for children (ages 6-12) and $24 seniors (65-79). Half day ticket prices are valid through March 18. Prices are $39 for adults, $33 for teens, $27 for children and $33 seniors.

The third annual Atomic City Winter Classic Hockey Tournament is underway at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink. Ten teams are participating in the three-day tourney, including two teams in C division, four in B division and four in A division. Finals got underway at 7:30 a.m. today. There is still public skating 1:30-3:45 p.m. today. The Los Alamos Cooperative Market is hosting a food booth and Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op has a beer garden set up. Officials Identify Man killed In Taos Ski Valley Avalanche

Officials have confirmed the identity of the skier killed Thursday in an inbounds avalanche at Taos Ski Valley as Matthew Zonghetti, 26, of Mansfield, Mass.

The second skier caught in the avalanche remained in critical condition Friday afternoon at University of New Mexico Hospital, according to Alex Sanchez, public information officer for the facility. His name has not yet been confirmed by officials.

The Los Alamos High School swimming and diving teams travelled to Albuquerque Academy Jan. 11-12 for the 21st Annual Academy Invitational meet.
The Hlltopper boys won the 19-team competition for the first time in a decade. Los Alamos outpointed arch-rival Academy, 978.885.
The girls improved also, placing second only to Academy in the 21-team field after placing third in the meet last year. Team scores for girls were Academy 981, Los Alamos 678 and Clovis 614 points.

One man has died, and another remained hospitalized with critical injuries Thursday night after an avalanche near Kachina Peak in Taos Ski Valley.

Holy Cross Hospital CEO Bill Patten confirmed that one of the men who was treated at their facility in Taos had died just before 5 p.m. of his injuries.

Officials had not released the identity of either victim as of late Thursday
