Bandelier Weekly Nightwalks in Frijoles Canyon Begin July 5

Starting Friday, July 5, Bandelier National Monument will be offering the popular Nightwalks each week (weather permitting) until the end of August.
"The Nightwalk is a very beautiful, timeless, and unusual experience, walking silently with a ranger in the dark in Frijoles Canyon" Bandelier Superintendent Jason Lott said. "We encourage visitors to take the Main Loop Trail in the daytime to learn about the Ancestral Pueblo people who lived here, and then come back in the evening to see their homes in a very different way."

Splash 'n Dash #1 Results Announced

The annual Splash ‘n Dash series began June 26 as a training event for the Los Alamos Triathlon, which occurs Aug. 17.

Splash ‘n Dash will occur every other Wednesday leading up to the Los Alamos Triathlon.

New this year is an even shorter course for the youngest athletes - a 100-yard swim followed by a quick run along the Canyon Road sidewalk.

ABIQUIU LAKE - Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death, yet the number of deaths by drowning could be reduced drastically if everyone would wear a life jacket.

Statistics show that 89 percent of those who drown at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lakes and rivers may have survived if they had worn a life jacket. Here are some safety tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July holiday.

Swimming in open water is different and more difficult than in a swimming pool.


Meet New Born Goats at PEEC July 2

Come to PEEC Tuesday, July 2 for your chance to meet week-old goats. Both Los Alamos and the Jemez are home to goat farms, and their owners will be at PEEC with some new borns.

This program is part of PEEC’s Summer Family Evenings and is free to PEEC members and just $5 per family for non-members. Drop in any time between 6:30-8 p.m.

Jessie Ross of Gypsy Mountain Ranch, and Debbie Wood of Second Bloom Farm will bring mom and baby goats to PEEC.

Los Alamos Fire Chief Troy Hughes commented this morning on public safety and the upcoming fireworks display sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.


The County contracts with the Kiwanis to provide the fireworks for the popular, family-friendly annual event held at Overlook Park in White Rock each Independence Day. At this point, the fireworks display is scheduled to go on as planned; however, Hughes stressed that many public safety and fire-wise considerations have been taken into account in the early planning stages.

Members of the Los Alamos Duplicate Bridge Club are offering free bridge lessons for students in Grades 4-12. These lessons are also being sponsored by the County Recreation Department.

Classes for kids in Grades 4-7 are being held at the White Rock Library 10:45 a.m. to noon Thursdays. Classes for students in grades 7-12 are being offered 1:30-3 p.m. Fridays in the downstairs

Great American Backyard Campout Saturday at Bandelier

Thousands of people around the nation will gather to take part in a one-night event called the "Great American Backyard Campout" Saturday, June 22. 

Join the staff at Bandelier National Monument for food and fun activities 6-9 p.m. at Juniper Campground. Visitors are encouraged to camp in Juniper Campground or arrive just to participate in the event. 

Activities include:

  • 6-7 p.m. – Did you say free food? Hot dogs, chips and beverages will be grilled by monument staff and offered free of charge.

County Horse Show Registration Open

The Los Alamos County Recreation Division presents the Los Alamos County Horse Show at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 20 at Brewer Arena.

Horse Show registration forms are available at the Aquatic Center or visit The deadline for pre-registration is 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 17. Return all registration forms to the Aquatic Center.

  • Pre-Registration: $5 class entry per participant (by July 17)
  • Late Registration: $8 class entry per participant (after July 17)
  • Family Registration: $30 per family. Families are three or more participants.

Taiji in the Park Has Moved

Free Bridge Lessons Offered For Kids

Members of the Los Alamos Duplicate Bridge Club are offering free bridge lessons for Students in grades 4-12, starting this week.

Classes for kids in grades 4-7 are 10:45 a.m. to noon Thursday, June 20 at the White Rock Library. Classes for students in grades 7-12 will be offered 1:30-3 p.m. Friday, June 21 in the downstairs Conference Room at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. These classes are once a week until further notice.

Students need not have previous experience in order to join these lessons.

Gear Donations Needed for Junior Golf Club Swap

The Los Alamos Junior Golf Association Annual Club Swap is set for 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, June 30 under the big tent at the Los Alamos Golf Course.

The Association is seeking donations of golf gear, including, clubs, umbrellas, head covers, shoes and other gear.

Join Bandelier staff and the Los Alamos Mountaineers for the second annual Introduction to Backpacking course.

This three part course will be offered Tuesday June 18, Thursday June 27, and Saturday and Sunday July 20 and 21. We encourage anyone who wants to experience Bandelier’s backcountry beyond day hikes to attend. Both beginner backpackers and those with experience are welcome to participate in this exciting event.

Romero Records Twofold First Place in Weekly Pace Race

Ted Romero was the top predictor as well as the fastest finisher in the three mile race in the weekly pace race Tuesday in hot, dusty conditions with a bit of smoke from the fires in the area on the sewage treatment plant access road in lower Bayo Canyon.
Romero was 16 seconds off his predicted time recording a 20:56 finish time. David Kratzer and Zach Medin were tied for second best predictor at 32 seconds off their predicted time.

County Recreation Division Joins Great American Backyard Campout

Los Alamos County Recreation Division will join thousands of families across the nation, gathering in their backyards, neighborhoods, communities, and parks June 22 to enjoy a night of camping for the Ninth Annual Great American Backyard Campout, organized by the National Wildlife Federation.

Join Smokey Bear, Sparky the Fire Dog, and Bert the Squirrel for camping games, songs, prizes and star gazing at Overlook Park June 22. A limited number of four person and six person tents are available for families who do not have tents and would like to join in the fun.

Bandelier Seeks Public Comment on Draft Transportation Alternatives

The National Park Service (NPS) is preparing a Transportation Plan/Environmental Assessment (plan/EA) to improve transportation conditions in Bandelier National Monument.

More than three decades of studies and workshops have documented transportation and congestion management challenges in Bandelier National Monument, including traffic congestion at the monument entrance and a lack of adequate parking in Frijoles Canyon.

Dirty Players Wanted for High Mountain Mudfest 2013

Registration in underway for the 9th Annual High Mountain Mudfest Mud Volleyball Tournament, hosted by the Los Alamos County Recreation Division.

The Adult Coed Competitive Tournament starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 20 at the North Mesa Mud Pits.

Teams must have 6-12 players, 18 and older, with at least four women per team.

The cost is $130 per team and the deadline to register 5 p.m. Thursday, July 18.

Summer Family Evenings Rock On at PEEC

PEEC’s popular Summer Family Evenings series is beginning again at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 11 with the Los Alamos Geological Society.

These events will continue every Tuesday evening in June and July. All the Summer Family Evenings are free to PEEC members. Other families pay $5 per family at the door.

The Los Alamos Geological Society will bring lots of rocks from our area and will share information about how those rocks where formed, where they can be found, and why New Mexico is such a great place to live if you love rocks and geology.

Kids Can Experience the Four Elements at PEEC

Beloved children’s librarian Melissa Mackey will teach four special classes at PEEC this summer for kids ages 8-12.

Elements will have sessions on earth, air, fire and water. The classes will be held the second and fourth Wednesdays of June and July from 2-3:30 p.m. and costs $8 or $6.50 for PEEC members.

June 12, the theme will be earth, and kids will get to build their own mud town! Mackey will help kids make mini adobe bricks, and will share stories and information about local mud-house building, both modern and ancient.

  • Pajarito Mountain Offers Fun Both Summer and Winter

Times have not been easy for Pajarito Mountain Ski Area. A string of mild winters caused low numbers of purchased season passes and shortened ski seasons and the Las Conchas Fire damaged two of the ski area’s chair lifts.

This rash of bad luck has not dampened enthusiasm for the ski area, however.
