Catch Of The Week: Facebook Marketplace Google Voice Scams

By BECKY RUTHERFORD

You might think just selling items on Facebook Marketplace is safe, but think again … it’s just one more way scammers can steal your personal information.

An older scam is making the rounds … it exploits Google Voice authentication codes to try to set up a fake account using your information.

How does it work?

Let’s say I’ve decided to sell my old cat tree on Facebook Marketplace because dang it all, my cats have absolutely wrecked it. It’s pretty beat up, I’m just asking $25. I immediately get bombarded with messages about it.

One person is asking me if I’m for real, Read More

Ortega: I Never Knew How Much My Mother Loved Me…

By LIL ORTEGA
Los Alamos

I never knew how much my mother loved me until I had a baby of my own.

My daughter was a tiny 7 pound wrinkled pink creature with a weirdly shaped head, but all I saw was my beautiful baby girl. She looked up at me through cloudy eyes straining to see her new world, and I was in love. Not like the love I had for my husband, but a love that I had never experienced, and at that moment I realized how much my own mother loved me. That realization was evident from the first moment I held my daughter in my arms.

I looked at her teeny tiny hands and her paper thin fingernails. I held my finger to her and Read More

McCall: ‘Let The People, By Their Actions, Decide On Solutions To Problems’

By Gene McCall
Los Alamos

I lived in Los Alamos during the summers of 1964 and 1965, then came permanently in 1969.

I have seen many changes in the county and in the Laboratory during my time here.

I found much with which to agree in the recent letter by George Chandler, and a few things with which to disagree. George is a friend, and I will not emphasize the points of disagreement, but I will, simply, express the opinions of another long-term resident. The phrasing may be a bit stilted, but I agree with Winston Churchill who said, “A preposition is not a word to end a sentence with, but that is a rule Read More

Wernicke: Intolerance Ain’t Welcome Round Here

On May 1, 2023, a 35-year-old horse rancher was fatally shot while driving home leaving behind a wife and 14-year-old daughter. His neighbor shot him 15-30 times while he was driving home. I want all the fathers to re-read that and think about it for a minute. The next part can wait…

In Latino culture, one of the proudest days of a father’s life is the day his daughter turns 15 and celebrates her “quinceañera”, or transition to womanhood. In another article, his daughter said referencing the suspect:

“Me and my dad were so excited to dance at my quinceañera, Read More

Letter To The Editor: 1989, 1999 & 2023

By LYNN HANRAHAN
Los Alamos

I was standing outside the big art museum in Vienna on a cold, snowy December Saturday in 1989 debating where best to spend the one hour my mother-in-law had allocated to art. Cousin Greti hated modern stuff. I was too sleepy to care, and I can’t remember what we decided on.

A bus pulled up. The walls were falling in the world that year. A new world order was being born. The bus, like dozens more waiting, was from the East. An elderly man disembarked. He was dapper in an elegant hat and black wool coat. He carefully held the rail and when he made it off he got to his knees, bent Read More

McQuiston: Five Tips To Protect Your Possessions With Valuable Items Insurance Coverage

By ALLEN MCQUISTON

You may think that a homeowners insurance policy provides adequate coverage for all your valuables, but policies may provide limited or no coverage for certain items — including generally expensive items — that are damaged or stolen.

For example, many homeowners policies generally have a $1,000 or $1,500 coverage amount for jewelry if the loss is due to theft. Such limits are in place to help keep homeowners policies affordable. However, if jewelry valued at $2,000 is stolen from your home and you have a $1,000 policy limit, Read More

Leonard: Fix Procrastination By Facing It Head On

By LAURA LEONARD
Doctor of Chiropractic

I’m a firm believer that we live on a continuum of behaviors, functional to dysfunctional. We excel in certain areas, are average in others and have some that need work. The problem lies in our willingness to be aware of the ‘needs work’ areas so we can better ourselves. We are trained from a young age to focus on our strengths but in reality, it’s our weaknesses that have the best value for improving us.

Overcoming our weaknesses by working on them creates a sense of self-worth like none other. Procrastination is simply the art of avoiding struggle Read More
