July 4, 1946, was the first Independence Day after the end of World War II. Because a lot of events were canceled during the war years, the nation was just starting to return to normal. In some ways 1946 bears a resemblance to this year, when some activities came back to life post-COVID.

With the war’s end there was jubilation and relief, but the military was still reporting losses. That July 4, the Navy Department published a list of 231 New Mexicans known dead and missing for the Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. First on the list was Jacob Read More

Stradling: How Can We Understand Each Other?

By GARY STRADLING
Los Alamos

Having written about the scientific validation of the relatively excellent outcomes for mothers, children, and fathers, through the social institution of marriage, over the reproductive alternatives (divorce, cohabitation, hook ups, isolation), and noting correctly that reproduction is the future of mankind, with technologically-advanced nations being at risk across the world because of their falling birthrates, with some at below-replacement level, Stephanie Nakhleh has had a field day making up alternative meanings for my statements.

By now you have probably heard that the supreme court struck down the Biden student loan forgiveness program. So have all the scammers! The FTC just issued a consumer alert warning consumers about potential scams around student loan forgiveness.

“Scammers often “take advantage of confusion around big news like this,” the FTC said in a consumer alert issued Saturday. “If you’re worried about repaying your loans, the offers to ’help’ can be tempting,” the alert said. “Scammers are likely to start blasting out robocalls and texts about ’helping’ you with your Read More

With summer upon us, we get to have quick salads or sandwiches when we are not grilling, and our summer meals come with little trouble. Kids are in and out from swimming or hiking or baseball and sit down meals are few when the heat is on. It is easy enough to grab some fruit or make PB&J with one foot out the door, but every now and then you want to make something special. Perhaps friends are coming to visit or there is something to celebrate, and you want to prepare an easy, but memorable meal. Try making tortilla Read More

Since moving to Los Alamos 10 years ago, I have been actively involved in the community and in Los Alamos Public Schools.

In March 2013, our family moved to Los Alamos from Michigan. We immediately felt at home here due to the support and community we found in Family Strengths Network (FSN). Our visit was supposed to be a short postdoctoral appointment before returning to the midwest, but Los Alamos and New Mexico quickly became a place that I never wanted to leave. Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews: Indiana Jones & The Dial Of Destiny

Review by CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is the fifth installment of the George Lucas/Steven Spielberg action-adventure film series. In the title role for a fifth turn is Harrison Ford, who, at nearly 82 years of age, has stated that this will be his last.

Four previous Indiana Jones movies tried to wow us in 1981 (Raiders of the Lost Ark), 1984 (The Temple of Doom), 1989 (The Last Crusade) and 2008 (The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull). Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade were very popular films, the other two not so much.
Many of us who stampeded to whichever
