Shirley Armstrong, 72, beloved wife and mother, would like to let you know that her work here is done. She received a call, a sort of an offer you can’t refuse, for an appointment from which she will not be returning. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she will be reunited with her son, sisters, brothers, and parents. She will be painting, gardening and raising chickens to her heart’s content.

She also left instructions for her husband and children to celebrate her time here, which has now been completed.

Edward R. “Ed” Flynn, Jr. of Carlsbad, NM passed away on Dec 14, 2017 at his home.

Ed served his country from November 1983 to March 1990 in the United States Navy with a focus on Nuclear Powered Submarines.

Ed moved to Carlsbad to begin his career at WIPP in 1990 in Maintenance as a Senior Electronic Technician. He was currently an Operations Specialist in Instrumentation and Control.

Ed is survived by three daughters: Gail Flynn, Allison Flynn, and Cara Flynn.

Donald Weber Brown passed away on December 24, 2017 at the age of 86 after a life well-lived.

Don received his Bachelors degree in Geology from UCLA and enlisted as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers, where he served in the Korean Conflict. After the war, Don attended UT Austin on the GI Bill and pursued a graduate degree in petroleum engineering. While working on his Masters, Don started dating another UCLA alum, Mary Louse Cook.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Antonio G. & Alcarita Archuleta; two brothers, J. Orlando & Ruth Archuleta, Johnny E. Archuleta; father of her children, Jose Zenon Martinez; and close companion, Tranquilino Vigil.

Jimbo is survived by his parents, Jim and Marcia Hutton of White Rock, his beloved son Kyle, of Los Alamos, Marion, the mother of his son, Kyle/s girlfriend, Alegra Martinez, his aunt and uncle, Bob and Lillian Apodoca, and countless cousins and friends.

Ken Sinclair, a long-time resident of Los Alamos, passed away December 3rd after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

Ken was born September 21, 1929, in Forest City, Missouri, and spent his childhood in northwest Missouri and Wyoming. He served for five years in the United States Navy and then completed his bachelor’s degree in accounting at the University of Colorado Boulder. He moved to Los Alamos in 1958 and worked for Zia Company and then at Los Alamos National Laboratory until his retirement.

George Barela, 49, a resident of Los Alamos passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2017 after a hard-fought and lengthy illness with Glioblastoma Brain Cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Marylou Barela.

Mr. Barela was the Owner of MasterCraft Paint and body, he also was a martial arts instructor, he also loved working out, and spending time with his family. He was extremely proud of the roles he played as a stunt double during the television show, Longmire. He enjoyed eating chocolate, and using his natural remedies.

Theodore Trevino Trujillo passed away Nov. 21 in Los Alamos. He was born Dec. 4, 1921 in Rancho de Taos to Jose Miguel Trujillo and Maclovia Martinez.

He is survived by his son Thomas Trujillo and partner Jeanice Swain, daughter Patricia Clay and her husband, John, brother Miguel Trujillo and his wife, Gertrude, sisters Sally Dinn and Maggie McWhorter, grandchildren, Maureen (Andrew) Olsen and their children, Matthew (Kate) Clay and their children, and Devin Clay.

Dr. Louis Rosocha died unexpectedly in Los Alamos, NM, on October 17, 2017.


Louis was born in Harrison, Arkansas, in 1950 to Stanley Rosocha and Wladyslawa “Lottie” Zarkowski Rosocha, and raised in Yellville, Arkansas.


He attended the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville), receiving his BS in physics in 1972. He received the MS and PhD degrees in physics, with a minor in chemistry, from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) in 1975 and 1979. While at UW-M, he met and married Emma Riemer.

Dennis E. Smith, 75, died Thursday, November 23, 2017, in Albuquerque, NM.

He was born February 23, 1942, in Washington, DC, to Ernest and Violet Smith. He grew up in Minneapolis, MN, and Los Alamos, NM.

After graduating from Los Alamos High School in 1960, he attended the University of Denver and later the University of New Mexico. He served in the U.S. Navy, where he trained to become an Electronics Technician.

Edward Casados passed away peacefully on Nov. 16, 2017 at his home in Los Alamos.

Edward was a loving and devoted husband for 70 years. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He retired from the Los Alamos Labs after 44 years where he was a chemist. He belonged to the English and Spanish Toastmasters. He had a deep faith in God and his church where he was a lector for many years.

Many knew him from his lifelong love of tennis. His strong love of music was passed down to his children and grandchildren.

Barbara Rogers Henderson, 81, passed away on November 15, 2017 at Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she was known for her smile and pretty eyes. 

She enjoyed living in Pajarito Acres very much since she was raised on a cotton farm in Atoka, south of Artesia, NM. She had her own horse and thus did not mind the “Horsey set” and especially the lot size.

Music was a large part of her life including clarinet, piano, organ and voice.

Elizabeth “Biffer” Martins was born in Illinois in 1922 and grew up in a small suburb of Rock Island called Milan. She loved school and tap dancing!

She graduated from Rock Island High School where she was the valedictorian. Following her high school graduation, her family moved to New Mexico, where her father had been born. 

Biffer used the shorthand she had learned in high school to work as a court reporter for the District Court in Albuquerque.

Biffer met her husband, Johnny, at a dance at Kirkland Air Force Base.

Marilyn Petschek, née Poth, passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2017 at the age of 92. She was living at El Castillo in Santa Fe at the time of her passing. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched.

Marilyn was born in New Orleans LA, and was raised in Lynbrook, NY. She held a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Smith College, and a Masters degree in Physics, from the University of Michigan.

On October 30, 2017 George H. Kolb passed away peacefully in the care of Hospice of the Valley in Surprise, Arizona with family at his side.

George was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 10, 1919. After technical high school, he became a welder by trade. In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific assigned to the Seabees. 

In August 1945, he was on 30 day leave to his home in Chicago when the Atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.

Camilla Patricia Van Sloun, 93, affectionately known as “Pat”, “Patty” and “Aunt Patty” and to her working contemporaries as “Van”, born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1924 passed away on November 10, 2017 after a long and fruitful life. 

She was the second child of her late parents Henry C. and Anna K. Van Sloun and sister to Maxine T. Burciaga, who preceded her in death. She earned a nursing degree, graduating in 1945 from the College of St Catherine in St. Paul Minnesota.

Barbara Keady longtime resident of Los Alamos who was a Los Alamos High School graduate in 1977 was a strong woman who battled brain cancer for 3 1/2 yrs.

Unfortunately, the cancer won the fight in the end, as she passed away peacefully on Oct. 29, 2017.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m., on Monday, November 20, 2017, at Calvary Albuquerque, 4001 Osuna Rd. NE.

Barb loved the mountains and the beach and would love to share her talent as an artist.

Joy Lynn Handsberry of Albuquerque, New Mexico, born April 5, 1968 in Dover, Delaware, lost her valiant battle with ovarian cancer on November 3, 2017 in Albuquerque. Joy was 49 years old.

Joy graduated as valedictorian of her class from Smyrna High School in 1986. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Mathematics from the University of Richmond in 1990, graduating first in her class once again.

Soon after earning her degree, she moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico and began her teaching career at Los Alamos High School.

Dr. Charles R. “Chuck” Mansfield, 79, passed away October 6, 2017.
From 1958 to 1969, he worked as a Siskiyou Smoke Jumper in the Northwest during the summers while attending college. After graduating, he received a post-doctorate position at NASA in Houston, Texas.
In 1973 he moved to Los Alamos and worked as a Physicist with LANL for many years before becoming the founding President of the Laboratory Retiree Group since 1994.

Jean Dummer died on Friday November 3, 2017. She was 86 years old. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family after an unexpected devastating stroke.

Betty Jean Roberts Dummer was born February 1, 1931 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She married Jerry on June 1, 1952, and after a year in Nashville (Jerry’s grad. school) and two years in Maryland (U.S. Army), they settled permanently in Los Alamos, NM in November of 1953.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and sons Gregory Jerome and John Roberts.

Frederic Robinson Fairfield, known to his friends and family as Eric, passed away on October 26th, 2017 in his Los Alamos home at the age of 70.

Eric was born in 1947 to Ruth Robinson and Edwin Eaton Fairfield of Orange, New Jersey. He attended the Pingry School in New Jersey before studying chemistry and math at Lehigh University. He earned his PhD in biochemistry in 1980 from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

After pursuing his postdoctoral research in Eugene, Oregon, where his daughter Jessamyn was born, he moved

Esther Rice Abernathey, 90, of White Rock, passed away Monday, October 23, 2017 at home. She was born in Hill City, Kansas, on April 18, 1927. Her parents were Clara Floy Law Rice and Lewis Herman Rice.

Esther grew up on a farm in Graham County Kansas during the Great Depression. She graduated from Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1949. It was at Fort Hays that she met Robert Abernathey, a returning Navy veteran, and they were married in January 1949. 

She was an early childhood educator for 20 years.

Ryan Barnes, 39, passed away unexpectedly on October 18, 2017 in Espanola, NM. He was born on February 26, 1978 in Los Alamos, NM and graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1996.
He is predeceased by his grandparents, Joe and Fran Segar and his uncle, Larry Segar. He is survived by his mother, Nancy Barnes.
Ryan started ice skating at the age of two and became an accomplished hockey player. He was offered an opportunity to try out for the New York Rangers, which he turned down.
