LORNA HAMILTON COOPER March 3, 1936June 9, 2013

Lorna Hamilton Cooper, a resident of Los Alamos for nearly 40 years, passed away Sunday June 9, 2013.

She was born March 3, 1936. She was the beloved child of Philip and Georgia Goss, and mother of Preston Cooper, Erika Cooper Gorman, and Linsday Cooper. She loved her grandchildren Ethan and Kelsey Prueitt, Dane Van Buren, Layn Biddle, Rigel and Andromeda Cooper, and Kyle and Grace Sackman. She raised Layn for several years and missed him every day after he moved to Alaska.

Lorna was a talented painter and photographer until her disease

On Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2013, as a result of a recent illness, our beloved father, Donald (Adonias) Ortega, 87, passed from this world into the open arms of the Lord.

Donald Ortega was a former resident of Los Alamos and resided in Idaho Falls with his daughter, Suzanna and son-in-law, Andrew Phillips since July 2011. Donald was born on March 13, 1926 in Las Vegas, NM to Maggie Ortega Trosper. As a young teenager, his first job was working for the railroad in Southern New Mexico.

Another member of the “Greatest Generation” has left our midst.

Retired Sen. Steve Stoddard of Los Alamos died at approximately 10 a.m. today. 

He was on hospice in the past week or more. His family had traveled to Los Alamos to be with him at the end.

Stoddard was a Los Alamos Living Treasure and known for his love of displaying the American flag at his home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Alcestis von Edeskuty; brothers, Joseph von Edeskuty and Jack Edeskuty and parents-in-law, Alfred and Adelia Bergren.

Fred was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was extremely proud of his children.

Marylee B. Lehman, 91, a resident of Los Alamos since 1947, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 12, 2013.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Lehman Sr.; son, Charles A. Lehman Jr.; and brother, Seth Baldwin.

Marylee was such a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, and was a very good seamstress. Marylee would make some of her children's and grandchildren's clothing. She enjoyed baking and one of her favorite things was baking cream puffs. No matter what holiday we were celebrating, she went all out decorating.

Crump graduated from Los Alamos High School and received a bachelor's degree in biology from Tennessee Tech. She was preceded in death by her Mother Betty Miller McClanahan. Moses Attrep, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and scientist died in Los Alamos, NM on May 8, 2013.

Born the youngest of seven children on January 2, 1939, in Alexandra, La., Moses grew up in Alexandria and went on to attend Louisiana College in Pineville, La. He continued on to graduate school in Arkansas, obtaining a Ph.D. in radiochemistry from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

While in Arkansas, he met Katherine Gerloff.


Bill Gaskill Memorial Saturday, May 18

Los Alamos resident Bill Gaskill died Jan. 22, 2013 and a memorial to celebrate his life with family and friends is set for Saturday, May 18.

The memorial will be 12:30 p.m. at the Pajarito Ski Lodge. The Los Alamos National Laboratory, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Rotary Club and Pajarito Mountain were the places he enjoyed the most.

She moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico in 1995 to live near her sister Francine J. Mendoza, brother-in-law Paul Mendoza and family.

Margaret loved babies and was pro life. She said, "what if my mother would have aborted me?"

Billie Crabb passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, May 3, 2013.

Billie had been a resident of Los Alamos for 66 years. She moved from Mineral Wells, Texas to Los Alamos to be with her father who at the time was working building the city.

She met her husband Billy Crabb and they were married in June of 1951. They were very active in church activities and were founding members of the White Rock Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school until her illness made that difficult.

Jeanette was the mother of Los Alamos Magistrate Court Judge Pat Casados and a frequent visitor to Los Alamos.

She was born October 6, 1928 in Ropesville, Texas. Jeanette was a long-time educator, having taught school in Hobbs, Porter, San Jon, Tucumcari and Eagle Nest, New Mexico. 

She had an entrepreneurial spirit about her, branching out to open her own Real Estate company in Angel Fire, New Mexico.

There will be a public memorial and celebration of the life and times of Martin L. Gursky at 3 p.m.,  May 26 at the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos, 1738 North Sage St.

Martin passed away earlier this year. The family invites his former colleagues and acquaintances to join his family and friends in remembering and reminiscing his life.

Dominic was born February 18, 1993. The day he was born there was a rainbow across Pueblo Canyon. This was a sign of the beautiful, kind, and gentle soul he became.

Benjamin Roy Saunders Jr, 85, known to most as Roy, passed away on March 24, 2013 with his family at his side.

Roy had recently moved to Colorado, but lived the majority of his life in Los Alamos and White Rock, NM.

Roy was born in Roanoke, VA to Ethel and BR Saunders and attended Roanoke College where he obtained a degree in Physics.

After college, he joined the Air Force and was assigned to supporting the scientific testing of nuclear devices through high speed photography and other assignments.

Scott Alan Irving (aka Dreddlokk Scott) was born Nov. 27, 1969, Thanksgiving Day, at Williams AFB in Mesa, Ariz.

Scott passed away March 23, 2013, due to complications from an asthma attack.

He was an exceptional athlete who played tennis and soccer in high school in Colorado Springs and was an avid skier.

Horris M. Crane passed away at home March 20, 2013, as a result of myelodysplastic syndrome and severe pressure sores.
Horris was well-loved by family and friends, a finish cabinetmaker, a talented artist and a hero to many.
He was born in September 1937, at the home of his parents Henry Doil and Gladys Crane, near Lamesa, Texas. Five minutes later, his twin brother arrived, to his parents' surprise.
The family moved to California early in WW II, and then back to a farm near San Angelo, Texas afterward. In 1946 they moved to Hobbs, New Mexico.

Arthur Nelson Cox, noted astrophysicist, author and editor, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Santa Fe. He was 85.

A public memorial service for Arthur will be held at the United Church of Los Alamos at 11 a.m. Monday, April 8.

Arthur was born October 12, 1927 in Van Nuys, Calif., to Arthur H. Cox and Sarah Nelson Cox. He was the third of their four children.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Donald, his older sisters, Marjorie-Jane and Priscilla, Joan
