Fidel Lee Gutierrez, 51, of Santa Fe , New Mexico passed away peacefully on his birthday, Nov. 3, 2013, in his home after a short, but courageous battle with cancer. He was a beloved son; husband, brother, uncle, friend, banker and leader in the community.

Fidel was born in Las Cruces , New Mexico on Nov. 3, 1962. He graduated from Santa Fe High School in 1980. After attending UNM and UCLA, he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from New Mexico State University in 1985.

Robert Francis Ford, 78, of Rio Verde, Ariz., died Nov. 2, 2013. A former Santa Fe, N.M. resident, Bob was born and grew up in Weymouth, Mass.

Fresh out of high school he joined the Navy and served in the Korean Conflict as an electronics technician (Petty Officer First Class) on the USS Lake Champlain and was decorated with various citations and commendations for bravery and valor.

Bob returned to Boston and completed his undergraduate, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Electrical Engineering at Northeastern University.

Andrew Edward Long was born Nov. 17, 1924 in Bartlesville, Okla., to Wesley Brooks Long and Annis Marie Henderson.

He passed away Monday, Sept. 23, 2013 at the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bonnie J. Scott Long; his son, Timothy E. Long of Santa Fe; and his daughter, Andra J. Long Riordan of Albuquerque; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Andy served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during WWII.

Celia G. Olivas was born in Durango, Colo., and grew up in Henderson, Nev., where she graduated from Basic High School. Her first job was a secretary to a lawyer.

Celia met Ray Olivas in San Luis, Colo., and they married in 1951. They moved to Colorado Springs and lived there until Ray finished his service in the army. They then returned to Henderson and started a family, having three children Vicki, Rick, and Theresa. Shortly after Theresa was born the family moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Paul Terp, a resident of Los Alamos, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013. Paul was preceded in death by his mom and dad, Eunice Madeline (Vanderleest) and Leslie Iver Terp, and his brother Ronald Terp. He leaves behind his wife, Susan (Duffy) and five terrific kids; Krissy Jonas, Stacy Jean Brittelle (Micah), Jacqueline Marie Love (Alastair), Katlyn Rose and Ronald James. He also leaves behind six grand-children that he adored; Haiden and Ella Brittelle; Ethan and Bryce Love; Gryffin and Phoenix Jonas.

Wilbur Knight Brown of Durango died from pneumonia Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. He was 81.

Dr. Brown was born July 6, 1932 in Oakland, Calif., to Herbert and Donna Brown. He grew up in Piedmont, Calif., and graduated from Piedmont High School.  

Known to family and friends as Bill, he attended the University of California at Berkeley, and obtained a doctoral degree in nuclear engineering. While at Berkeley, Bill was involved in the NROTC program and subsequently served in the U.S.

Carol C. Wall, 96, passed away peacefully in the presence of family and loved ones on September 26, 2013. Carol moved to Los Alamos, NM in December 2006 to be close to son Gary.

Born in Marietta, Ohio on December 6, 1916, she moved with her mother to Denver, CO in 1939 following her father's death. It was there that she met Larry Wall.They were married on July 5, 1941. Shortly after Larry left for 4 years of service during WWII. Carol singlehandedly raised their first son, Larry, Jr.

Cecil L. Gooch, formerly of Los Alamos, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013.
Cecil was born December 24, 1918 in Kansas to Jerry and Lillian M. Gooch. He served in the U.S. Army, Company M, 148 Infantry, and was very proud to have done so. After his honorable discharge, Cecil moved to Los Alamos in 1947 to work for the Zia Corporation as a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. He retired from the Laboratory in 1979 and remained in Los Alamos until he relocated in Albuquerque where he lived until his death.

Charles E. Morris, 72, formerly of Los Alamos, died on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 in Scottsdale, Arizona.  
He was born in Detroit, Michigan and received his doctorate from Iowa State University. From 1968 - 1994, he was a research physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory (M-6), and was active in skiing and golf.  
After retirement, he pursued an interest in woodworking, designing and building cabinetry and furniture for his home. Chuck is survived by his wife, Ellen. No services will be held.

Former LANL Director Harold Agnew Has Died

Harold M. Agnew, died Sept. 29 2013 at his home in Solana Beach, Calif.

Agnew was present at Fermi's first neutron chain reaction Dec. 2, 1942, director of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory for 10 years and for 10 years president of General Atomics.

He had been afflicted with chronic lymphocytic leukemia since spring.

Agnew was born in Denver, Colo. After receiving his undergraduate degree in chemistry from the University of Denver in 1942, he joined Enrico Fermi’s research group at the University of Chicago.

Edgar Davis Bush Jr., 81, of Los Alamos, N.M. died on September 22, 2013. “Ed” was born on January 1, 1932 in Morenci, Ariz. He is survived by his wife Carolyn, son Mike and wife Donna of Chandler, Ariz., his grandson Matthew and wife Maureen and his great grandson Declan of Renton, Wash. He was preceded in death by his grandson Danny.

He was taken from us after a 9 month battle with cancer. Ed’s full life ended peacefully with his wife and son by his side.

Myron L. Stein, 85, a resident of Los Alamos, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013. He was born in Sacramento, Calif., where he grew up, attending University of California at Berkley, receiving a degree with honors in Astronomy.  

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in the South Pacific. Following his service, he joined his older brother, Leland Stein, in Los Alamos where Myron worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for 50 years, retiring in 2008 and as a Guest Scientist continued to come to the Lab.

Bonnie was born July 20, 1954 in Bloomington, Indiana, the third daughter of four children of William and Barbara (Hamilton) Murchie. Bonnie graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1972 and went on to receive a BA in chemistry in 1976 with Phi Beta Kappa and an MS in geophysics in 1979 from Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana. Bonnie was an acclaimed soloist and playwright in high school productions.

Charles (always known as “Charley”) was born July 21, 1939 in Alice, Texas to John Arleigh and Nellmarie Huff and spent most of his childhood in Boerne.

He met the love of his life, Mary Katherine Vogt, when he was 9 years old, and they celebrated 53 years of marriage on August 27, 2013.

Russell Hugh Hand was born May 30, 1924 and died on Aug. 27, 2013 at the age of 89 due to a traffic accident.
He grew up in Deer Park, Texas and was the third born of six brothers. After receiving a college football scholarship, he joined the Navy and was stationed in the Philippines. When he returned from WWII he began working for the Shell Oil Company and also was a devoted volunteer firefighter for over 25 years.
In June of 1949, Russell married the love of his life, Faye. They would be married for 64 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Irene U. Boone, parents Hettie (Penland) and Andrew Boone, brothers Hudson and Charles, sisters Flora, Ruth and Dorothy and son Charles.  

Slim was born Aug. 27, 1918 in Yancy County, NC. His early years were spent working on farms in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He moved into Washington, D.C. and after working on bridge construction he was hired for the trolley system where is gained his experience with electronics.
