GLORIA LOUISE CORDOVA July 31, 1938 April 18, 2016

Gloria Louisa Cordova, long-time Los Alamos resident, passed away on April 18, 2016 after a 16-month struggle with pancreatic cancer.

Gloria was born in Trinidad Colo. on July 31, 1938. After high school she joined the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati and graduated from their Mount St. Joseph College with a B. S. degree in chemistry. She taught math and chemistry in high schools in Denver and Trinidad, and then after leaving the community, moved to Los Alamos where she taught chemistry at the high school for 10 years.

James (Jim) Lowell Anderson, 77, of Boulder, CO passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016.


Jim was born in Santa Rita, NM and grew up in the Grant County area of New Mexico and was a long-time resident of Los Alamos, NM. Jim attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM, and earned a in Chemistry in 1961 and a M.S. degree in Chemistry 1963.  In 1966 he earned a PhD in Nuclear Chemistry from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL.

DAVID W. CARROLL Dec. 3, 1947 - April 26, 2016

David W. Carroll, 68 of Los Alamos passed away Tuesday, April 26th, 2016 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

He was born on December 3, 1947 in Portland, Oregon and lived in the Pacific Northwest until moving with his family to Los Alamos in 1955. He graduated from the Los Alamos High School in 1965 and the University of Northern Colorado in 1969 with a degree in Industrial Arts and Meteorology.

He worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory for 42 years until retirement in April 2012.

June Perusek, 98, a resident of White Rock for eight years, died April 17 in a Greeley, CO, assisted living facility.

Perusek moved to Greeley in 2014.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra (Ken) Johnson of White Rock.

Patricia Nell Califa of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, passed away the end of March following her struggle with cancer. She had recently retired from a long career as an Executive/Legal Secretary in Texas, New Mexico, and Florida.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Eugenia and Paul Califa, and by her son, Aaron. Patricia is survived by her daughter, Molly, daughter-in-law, Janet, and granddaughters, Violet, Phoenix, Orchid, and Aspen, as well as her four sisters, Cathy, Ethel, Stephany, and Susan.

Paul Kraemer passed away on March 24th, 2016 after a full and productive life.

Paul was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Huldah and E.O Kraemer on March 19, 1930. He earned a Doctorate in Public Health from Tulane University, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the Wistar Institute, a biomedical Center focusing on cancer research and vaccine development.

He was recruited by Wright Langham for his training in cancer research to be a part of a new Cell and Molecular Biology group in H-4 in 1964. He retired from LANL in 1995. Paul published

Samantha M. Davis died at home in the Sangre de Christo Mountains April 6, 2016 after a two-year fight with cancer. She was 58 years old and of the Christian faith.

Born in Roanoke, VA she was adopted and raised by John Simon and Lorene Owens in Williamsburg, VA.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband, David Browning Thomson and by her brother Bill Turney and sister Genevieve Ratcliff.  She is survived by her three children and their spouses; Debra and John Beeson of Santa Fe, NM, Barbara and Keith Emery of Phoenixville, PA, and David and Audrey Thomson of Loveland, CO.

Fay Hicken Jarvis was born November 1, 1917 in Provo Utah to Elijah M. Hicken and Erma I. Jensen. Her family resided in Salt Lake City, Utah; Hinckley, Utah; Cowley, Wyo.; and Richmond, Utah where her father served as a seminary instructor and principal, and she later taught elementary school students.

Fay attended LDS Business College then BYU earning a degree in Elementary Education. At BYU, she met George Jarvis and married in the Logan LDS temple in August 1940, a year after her graduation.

Lenore S. Dudgeon died peacefully in her sleep on April 3, 2016 from complications secondary to cancer. 

Lenore was born January 5, 1932 in Wilkes-Barre, PA to Maurice and Eleanor Schaller. After completing nursing school in Pennsylvania she was chosen to attend advanced training in anesthesia where she graduated as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.   

In 1957 she moved to Las Vegas, NV to pursue her career in anesthesia.

Jessica Dawni Fleming (Casados) was made an angel April 1, 2016 due to complications of a car accident in September.

To many, Jessica was known as the “flowers girl” working at Mills Brothers, Blooming Shop and Bella Cosa Flowers. She loved working with flowers and sharing her talent with everyone. She loved doing weddings. She even did her own bridal bouquet. In more recent times she could be found greeting and helping guests at the Holiday Inn Express.

Jessica was born, March 16, 1978 and raised in Los Alamos.

James Wylie Gordon, 82, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at Brewster Place in Topeka, Kansas. He was born January 21, 1934, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Charles Wylie Gordon and Hazel May Williams.

After graduating from Topeka High School in 1952, James attended the University of Chicago before enlisting in the Navy from 1954-1957. Following his enlistment, he attended the University of Kansas, earning first a B.S. in Physics in 1961, and then a Ph.D. in Physics in 1968.

Dr. Mark Anthony Mathews, 74, a resident of Los Alamos, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2016 due to MS related causes.

He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Mary Mathews and brother Karl Mathews. Dr. Mark Mathews was an avid outdoorsman and a hunter. He collected clocks and loved to use his hands to build many different projects. He was a passionate geophysicist committed to his work. He worked with nuclear energy and contributed to numerous scientific publications and professional journals.

Howard Overton Richerson, 85, a resident of Los Alamos, born April 13, 1930, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2016.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel (Scott) and Freida Richerson; siblings, Barbara Winters, Geraldine Wade and Nathaniel (Bud) Richerson; children, Rebecca Richerson-Farris and Jeffery Richerson. Howard grew up with an appreciation for the mountains and the landscape of the Southwest. He moved to Los Alamos where he met and married his wife Carmen. They are both graduates of Los Alamos High School.

Joseph Lynn Parkinson, born January 2, 1933 in Pintura, Utah, died on March 27, 2016 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Lynn was an avid sportsman and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, hiking, tennis, and golf. He was also an excellent gardener. Lynn met his bride, Joy, while attending college at Cedar City, Utah. They were married on September 14, 1955.
His first job was with Boeing in Seattle, Washington. During his years in Seattle, he completed a Bachelor degree in mechanical engineering.

James Richard Eichor, age 83, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2016 at Stonebrook Assisted Living in Denison, Texas. He loved his family, family vacations, taking pictures, airplanes, and automobiles. He was loved by everyone, and will be dearly missed by all.

Mr. Eichor was born on April 17, 1932 in Guthrie Center, Iowa, the son of Hugh and Opal Eichor. He married Alice Marie Spain in Casey, Iowa in Feb 1954. He enlisted in the Marines in 1952 and received his boot camp training at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA.

Capt. USNR-Retired Douglas Ward Lier, longtime Los Alamos resident, athlete and community volunteer died March 26th, 2016, from renal cancer.  He was nearly 85 years old.

Born in Green Bay, Wisconsin April 25, 1931, he spent his summers waterskiing and winters ski jumping.  Doug graduated with a Physics degree from St. Olaf in Northfield, Minnesota.

Clifton “Skip” Collins, Jr. a resident of White Rock, NM passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, with his family by his side.

He was born in Oklahoma City, OK on August 12, 1939.  He was preceded in death by his father, Clifton M. Collins, Sr., mother Lois Casperson-Collins, and Uncles Robert and Ralph Casperson.

After proudly serving in the Army he returned to New Mexico and started his career as a Security Specialist for the Los Alamos National Laboratory and retired after twenty three years.

The Celebration of Life for Thomas Spickermann will take place on Friday, April 1st at the Hernandez Community Center from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please come reminisce and celebrate Tom’s life with his family, friends, and co-workers. 19418 US HWY 84, Hernandez. This is a potluck event.

Thomas, 53, died in a plane crash near Ohkay Owingeh airport on March 11, 2016. Also in the plane was Karen Young of Los Alamos. Karen had rented the Remos GX in Santa Fe. Tom was the co-pilot. No official word has yet been released on the cause of the crash.

Mark Anthony Chavez, born February 13, 1962 of Los Alamos, New Mexico, passed away from liver failure after a two year courageous fight. He went into the arms of the Lord peacefully on March 6, 2016.

Mark was a graduate of Los Alamos High School, class of 1980, and obtained a Certificate of Barbering in 2013 from Northern New Mexico Community College.

He was preceded in death by his oldest brother Mitchell Paul Chavez, older brother Nicholas Thomas Chavez, his oldest nephew Jason A. Smith, and brother in-law Joe E. Chavez.

Funeral services for Karen Ann Young, 46, who died in the crash of a single engine aircraft she was flying, will be Friday, March 18, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos. Burial will be in Gauje Pines Cemetery followed by a reception at the church’s Karen McLaughlin Parish Hall.

Young was a native of Los Alamos. She graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1987. She earned the B. S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and the Master’s and Ph.D Degrees in Materials Science, all from the University of California, Davis Campus.
