Los Alamos Home Tour Showcases Eight Residences

Eight Los Alamos families are working hard to prepare for Los Alamos Home Tour 2012. The families will open their homes to visitors 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29. 

The event will benefit the Family Strengths Network (FSN.) Tickets are $20 in advance and may be purchased CB FOX, Otowi Station, Los Alamos Medical Center Gift Shop and the Reel Deal Theater.

On the day of the tour, tickets may be purchased at 9 a.m. in front of Ruby K’s for $25.

Homes on the tour include new homes, remodeled homes and a historic home on Bathtub Row.

Grilled salmon

Fish seasoning:

  • Equal parts of -- No Salt Cajun Seasoning
  • Onion Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • -- 1/2 part of Mesquite seasoning
  • Salmon Filets with skin on
  • Spray butter
  • Seasoning (above)

** If you need to freeze the uncooked fish filets, put them in a plastic zip bag and put in a little water and a tablespoon or two of lemon juice. Zip the bag with all of the air out and do not freeze for more than one month.

  • 2/3 cup butter(softened)
  • 2 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 6oz chocolate chips
  • 6 oz butterscotch chips
  • 3 2/3 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup sweetened coconut

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, add brown sugar, butter, and cream together.

Smoky Cheese Fondue

  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 4 cloves garlic (pressed)
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 (12 oz) beer, NOT all at once (I like the dark beer)
  • 2 teaspoons brown mustard
  • 4-5 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 1/2 cup Monterey Jack (shredded)
  • 1 1/2 cup smoked gouda cheese or smoked cheddar (shredded)
  • paprika on top
  • bread cubes for dipping

Italian Parmesan Cheese and Herb Bread
 
 
1¼ cup warm water ** see note about water in recipe
1Package of dried active yeast
-----------------------------
3 Cups of bread flour (I use King Arthur)
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons dry milk powder
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons of softened butter
4 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese (Kraft is fine)
1 teaspoons dried chopped rosemary
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 ½ teaspoons dried marjoram
1 ½ teaspoons dried thyme
Small amount of olive oil for pan

To make the base for all of these I use the sourdough baguette bread you get at Smith’s. Cut them at a diagonal and butter one side. Arrange them butter side down in a non stick fry pan. Have a sauce pan about the same size as the bottom of the fry pan and fill it with about 2 inches of water. You need the water to add weight to the pan. Put the sauce pan on the top of the bread and the weight will press the bread into the fry pan making a beautiful crust on the bread. Cook until golden.

10-inch tart pan or large pie plate
 
Filling:
8 cups cherries, washed and pitted and halved
½ cup sugar
5 tablespoons cornstarch
½ teaspoon mace or nutmeg
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
 
 
Topping:
1 1/4 cup flour
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoon baking soda
¾ teaspoon salt
2 eggs
butter - for dotting the top

Mix ½ cup of sugar into the cherries and let sit ½ hour.

Island Flank Steak
  • 1 1/2 to 2 pound flank steak
  • 1 cup Teriyaki marinade
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 1/3 cup mango juice (found in fresh juice area)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped rosemary, fresh
  • 1 tablespoon dark sesame oil
  • 4 large cloves garlic, pressed
  • black pepper
  • Reserve 3/4 cup of mix for basting during cooking.
 
Mix all marinate ingredients together.

Discovering Tierra Amarillo

Driving down N.M. 84, we watched Los Alamos, Espanola and even the scatterings of roadside businesses in Abiquiu just slip past the windows.

Soon, there was nothing filling the windows but a gray strip of asphalt and huge, scenic landscapes.

This is when the adventure began.

My traveling partner (my mother) and I picked Tierra Amarillo to visit at random.

Strawberry Delight
 
***** Make sure to mix up the Jello layer first (needs time to set up a bit.) Use a 9 x 13 pan
 
Ingredients:
CRUST:
  • 2 cups crushed small stick (sticks only) pretzels (about 6 oz). I find it best to crush them in the bag they come in. Take what you don’t need out and put them in a different bag.
  • 3/4 cup melted butter
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar

FILLING:
  • 1- 8oz cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1- 8 oz cool whip
  • 1 cup sugar
TOPPING:
  • 1 large strawberry Jello
  • 3 cups boiling water
  • 1- 16 oz frozen

Caramel Banana Bread
 
4 cups bread flour
2 cups of walnut pieces
1 ½ cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons butter- melted
3 eggs
2 teaspoons caramel extract (can find it in Santa Fe or Internet)
½ cup caramel ice cream syrup in glass jar-- plus ¾ cup to drizzle over each piece of bread during plating 6 large bananas mashed but with little lumps still in them.

“Health Speak Out” Town Hall Seeks Public Comment

The Los Alamos Community Health Council (LACHC) is sponsoring a “Health Speak Out” Town Hall Meeting noon to 1:30 p.m., Monday June 11 in the Los Alamos Community Building on the corner of 20th Street and Central Avenue.

The goal of the Town Hall is to gather information from a wide range of health care consumers about their needs, health care experiences and recommendations.

LACHC will also share a summary of its 2011-2012 LACHC Los Alamos County Health Profile.

Bring your own brown bag lunch. Drinks will be supplied.

Bandelier Extends Public Comment Period

Bandelier National Monument has extended the public comment period on the management of the Tsankawi Unit to June 15. 

Earlier this month, the park hosted two public meetings on the planning process.

They invited everyone who is interested in the future of Tsankawi to provide input on how best to manage the cultural and natural resources found there.

The Tsankawi Unit is an 826-acre area that is geographically separate from the main portion of Bandelier National Monument.

Get a sip of New Mexico with one of the special tours offered by New Mexico Wine Tours. New Mexico is the oldest wine making region in the country, with more than 40 wineries and tasting rooms.

“We often combine wine tasting with scenic tours or recreational events” said Cindy Capelli, owner and operator of New Mexico Wine Tours. “I tailor the tour to what the guests want to do.”

Some dedicated wine tasters choose to visit up to six wineries, while others choose to combine wine tasting at two or three wineries with an afternoon

On April 28, 2012, the banner of the Shire of Bryngolau (Shining Hill in Welsh) was raised for the first time when local members of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) gathered for a day of fighting, feasting, music and dance in the style of the Middle Ages.

It was the Shire’s first official event.

SCA is a non-profit educational organization devoted to the study of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. It isn’t just about research far from it.
