State Assistance Continues As Multiple Fires Burn Across New Mexico

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) in coordination with other state agencies, continue to respond to the communities affected by the multiple fires currently burning in New Mexico.

The watershed in Los Alamos Canyon has had a rough time. It was hit with two major wildfires and several floods. As a result, the watershed has become choked with sediment causing damage to the pipeline that connects Los Alamos Reservoir to the townsite’s non-potable water system as well as the road leading to the reservoir.

NMDOH And NMED Issue Smoke Advisory For Northeastern New Mexico Thursday Evening

NMDOH News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Health and the New Mexico Environment Department Wednesday issued a smoke advisory for communities in San Miguel, Mora and Colfax Counties due to anticipated smoke from the Hermits Peak Fire in New Mexico.

The advisory will be in effect through Thursday evening. The Hermits Peak Fire started at about 4:30 p.m., April 6, 2022, approximately 12 miles northwest of Las Vegas at the base of Hermits Peak in the Pecos Wilderness.

The Hermits Peak Fire is burning through mixed conifer in steep, rugged terrain that poses challenges for firefighter access. Read More

The Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s (DOE/NNSA) Los Alamos Field Office has issued a Wetland Assessment for the Replacement Water Lines from Technical Area 48 to Technical Area 55 Project (Wetland Assessment) for a 15-day public review and comment period commencing with publication of this notice.

SANTA FE — Forest visitors planning to spend Easter weekend on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) are reminded to take precautions by following One Less Spark guidelines and Smokey Bear’s Campfire Safety rules.

SFNF: Prescribed Burn Planned For Santa Fe Watershed Postponed Indefinitely

SANTA FE — Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) have postponed the previously announced prescribed burn in the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed on the Española Ranger District.

Earlier, fire managers had identified a window starting April 18 to implement the prescribed burn to reduce fuel loading and protect the watershed that provides approximately 40 percent of the water for Santa Fe residents.

NNSA To Conduct Aerial Radiation Assessment Survey Over Boston April 14-18

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) will conduct low-altitude helicopter flights over the Boston Marathon route Thursday, April 14, through Monday, April 18 in preparation for the race and the events related to it.

The spring runoff has started in Northern New Mexico. Streamflows are rising and will likely continue to rise through April and into May.

We have a decent snowpack this year, but it’s going to take several years of good snowpacks to help pull us out of the prolonged drought we have been experiencing.
