Churro Sheep Shearing Event At Los Luceros Historic Site

NMDCA News:

The community is invited to join expert sheep-shearer Kerry Mower 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 11, as he brings his traditional shears to the coats of Los Luceros Historic Site (LLHS) and observe how Española Fiber Arts skirt the wool to clean and choose the best wool for weaving.

Additionally, LLHS will hold a Ranger Talk about the history of Churro sheep in New Mexico at 11 a.m. and create some Churro sheep wool crafts.

This event is included in site admission: $7 adult, children 16 and under are free.

New Mexico Counties Awards More than $222,000 For Wildfire Risk Reduction

SANTA FE — New Mexico Counties awarded more than $222,000 to nine grant recipients for community wildfire protection plan updates, fuel reduction treatments, and education efforts through the 2022-2023 Wildfire Risk Reduction Grant Program for Rural Communities.

Daily Postcard: Wildlife, like this gray vireo family, is abundant at Bandelier National Monument. All visitors to Frijoles Canyon including the visitor center, park store, café and Pueblo Loop Trail between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. are required to take a shuttle bus. Outside those hours, visitors may drive directly down into Frijoles Canyon. The shuttle bus carries visitors from the White Rock Visitor Center on N.M. 4 to the Frey Trailhead (across from Juniper Campground) and then to the park visitor center. The Quemazon mesa area is a geologic thumb that extends eastward from the rim of the Valles Caldera mountains. 

It has a relatively flat, sloping top that represents a kind of natural garden for plants growing after the Cerro Grande Forest fire from 22 years ago. Variations in the growth of plants can be seen over the summer. Groves of Aspen trees provide one variation for April and May.

LANL: Community Relations Plan For Hazardous Waste Facility Permit – Request For Input

The Los Alamos National Laboratory generates some hazardous and mixed waste.  

In November 2010, the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) issued the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Hazardous Waste Facility Permit (EPA ID Number NM0890010515-1).

The Permit establishes standards for how LANL manages, stores and treats hazardous wastes on-site and for the closure and post-closure care of permitted waste management units.
