The New Mexico Environment Department’s (NMED) Department of Energy (DOE) Oversight Bureau invites members of the public to an open house and community engagement meeting, 3-7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 the Los Alamos Oversight Section Office at 1183 Diamond Dr., Suite B. 

All interested members of the public are encouraged to attend and learn more about what NMED’s DOE Oversight Bureau does for the Los Alamos community and surrounding areas.

New Mexico Supreme Court Upholds $74,000 Restitution Owed In Cody W. Davis Poaching Case

SANTA FE — Earlier this year, the Supreme Court of the State of New Mexico upheld a Court of Appeals judgement, which ordered Cody W. Davis of Arnegard, North Dakota to pay $74,000 in restitution to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) (department) for poaching a trophy mule deer buck in December 2015.

This civil restitution included $20,000 for the trophy mule deer that was killed out of season, without a license and resulted in the waste of game. An additional $54,000 was assessed as reimbursement Read More

TAOS — The Type 2 Southwest Area Incident Management Team 5 will transfer management of the Calf Canyon-Hermits Peak Fire to a Type 3 Incident Management Team at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18.

Downsizing from a Type 2 organization to a Type 3 is a result of the work accomplished by the SWA IMT Team 5.

The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos will be collecting and buying aluminum cans Saturday, Sept. 17 to be sent for recycling.

Collection hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the First United Methodist Church on Diamond Drive (near Sullivan Field).

The community is encouraged to bring the aluminum cans they’ve had accumulating and help support the environment and the Kiwanis.

Governor Signs Emergency Declaration For Hidalgo County Due To Severe Flooding

SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham Tuesday announced that she has signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency in Hidalgo County due to recent severe flooding, making available additional funding and state resources for affected communities.

The emergency declaration comes after monsoon rain events that began in August have resulted in flooding that broke the all-time record water level for the Gila River water gauge near the Village of Virden and resulted in damage to both private and public property.

Wildfire Preparedness Is Year-Round: Don’t ‘Fall’ Behind

SANTA FE — Fall is not the time to fall behind on wildfire preparedness. Although much of New Mexico has seen a robust monsoon season, large wildfires in other parts of the country have created competition for firefighting resources at the national level.

The national wildland fire preparedness level is currently at 4 out of a possible 5, which means approximately 80 percent of all incident management teams and firefighting personnel are committed to incidents, and some fires may last until winter snow falls, putting additional stress on exhausted personnel.
