SANTA FE—Immerse yourself in cowboy culture Aug. 9-11 at the New Mexico History Museum’s Wild West Weekend, a special event celebrating the exhibition Cowboys Real and Imagined.

Cowboy musicians and poets join trick ropers, saddle makers, silversmiths and more to provide three days of hands-on fun for the whole family. The events are free; the exhibition is by regular admission (Sundays free to New Mexico residents, Friday evenings free to everyone, children 16 and under free daily.)

Saturday, July 20 at noon, Bandelier will present the very special documentary, "Canes of Power" in the theater at the park Visitor Center.

In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln presented silver-headed ebony canes to the Governors of the 19 New Mexico Pueblos to recognize their authority, sovereignty, and relationship with the Federal government. Similar canes had been presented by the government of Spain in 1620 and that of Mexico in 1821.

TAOS—Voted by locals as Taos News’ 2013 “best annual event in Taos County,” Fiestas de Taos revives a centuries-old celebration of Taos, New Mexico’s culture, history and traditions with weekend long events July 19–21 in Taos Plaza.

Known originally as Fiesta de Santa Ana y Santiago, Fiestas de Taos (Taos Fiestas) is a community celebration honoring the two Catholic patron saints of Taos – St. Anne (Santa Ana) and St. Yago (Santiago), celebrated in Taos since the 1600s.

Sumo Robots Rumble at the Hive Saturday

The Hive is holding its first ever Mini-Sumo Robot Rumble starting at noon Saturday, July 13 and continuing until there is a winner.  The public is invited to visit the Hive and watch the competition. The Hive is at 134 N.M. 4, in White Rock just east of Metzger's Do it Best Hardware. 

Mini-Sumo Robots are electronic gadgets that are fun to build and program without extensive technical knowledge. The Hive plans to offer more Mini-Sumo Robot building classes along with Arduino Microprocessor instruction.

What could be better than spending an evening listening to beautiful chamber music? How about if desserts were thrown into the mix? Now that is one sweet deal!

The Los Alamos Arts Council presents the Summertime Coffeehouse July 20 at Fuller Lodge. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and music begins at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at CB FOX.

Seating is limited so people are encouraged to purchase their tickets as soon as possible.

Auditions for 'Arsenic and Old Lace' Coming Up

Arsenic and Old Lace opened the 1944-1945 theater season in Los Alamos. Today, 69 years later, as Los Alamos Little Theatre celebrates its 70th season, they are bringing back this hilarious classic full of surprises. 

Los Alamos Little Theatre will hold auditions for Arsenic and Old Lace 7-9 p.m. Sunday, July 7 and  7-9 p.m. Monday, July 8 at the Performing Arts Center, 1670 Nectar in Los Alamos. Scripts are available at Mesa Public Library for a 24-hour perusal period.

There are 14 parts for 14 cast members. Everyone is welcome to come and try out.

With Police Chief Wayne Torpy on sick leave and staffing issues at the police department, Los Alamos County Sheriff Marco Lucero has accepted the invitation to step in and compete in the "Thrill of the Grill" Chicken Challenge 3-5 p.m. July 4 at Overlook Park.

The 57th season for the Santa Fe Opera opened Friday, June 28 and two apprentices performed Sunday afternoon to a full house at Fuller Lodge in Los Alamos.

Bass Rocky Sellers and Mezzo-Soprano Kate Tombaugh were accompanied by Kirt Pavitt on piano.

Tombaugh recently made her solo debut at New York City’s Carnegie Hall upon winning the Barry Alexander International Vocal Competition.

Los Alamos Salutes Americans with Free 4th of July Fireworks Show & Events

In honor of Independence Day, Los Alamos is offering many free events on July 4 to celebrate our freedoms including a fireworks show, Fun Run and naturalization ceremony to welcome our newest Americans.

Families will have the liberty on whether or not to walk or run at the “Firecracker 5K Family Fun Run” on July 4. The walk/run benefits the YMCA, with entry fees for adults at $25; $10 for youth and $15 for YMCA members. T-shirts are included, door prizes will be given away, and prizes will be awarded to the person with the best 4th of July inspired costume.
