‘Amelie’ Wins You Over With Whimsical Sweetness

on December 31, 2013 - 9:57am

Movie poster for 'Amelie.'

The next film in the library’s Free Film Series, while not technically holiday themed, is so buttery rich and honeyed that it belongs in The Nutcracker’s Land of Sweets.

“Amelie” (2001, rated R for sexuality) tells the life story of Amelie Poulain, beginning with her conception and building to her first cutely quixotic attempt at romantic love.

Amelie has a horrible, but hilariously summarized, childhood.

Reel Deal Theater

This week through Jan. 1, we are holding Walking with Dinosaurs 3D, Saving Mr. Banks, Anchorman 2 and The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.

Jan. 2, we hope to open The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle. The studios have not totally confirmed these bookings for us but hopefully they’ll consider our small town, especially after our constant badgering.

Both of these films will be Academy Award considerations, so the studios are not releasing these films in one huge distribution.

on December 18, 2013 - 8:13am
Reel Deal Theater

The films we are opening this week will continue through Christmas. On Thursday, after much consideration we will open Anchorman 2. On Friday we open Walking with Dinosaurs 3D, and Saving Mr. Banks. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug will continue through Christmas.

Saving Mr. Banks is really our Christmas movie. We originally did not make the cut, as Disney is releasing only 2,000 prints. Because of the small size of our town, we are not usually in the running until there is a 2,500-3,000 print release.

Reel Deal Theater

This Friday, we are opening a couple of films that are not for the kid's but we are holding Frozen, and Hunger Games. Delivery Man, and All is Lost will both leave us this Thursday.

This week we finally got a print of 12 Years a Slave. It will open on Friday for a one week run only. I've had a lot of requests for this film and managed to get it for a week. We're opening it between holidays, as it's not really a holiday film being both brutal, and tragic. The film is getting over-the-top reviews and is sure to get an Oscar nomination.

'Joyeux Noel' Might Be Perfect Christmas Movie

on December 1, 2013 - 9:14am

Movie Review by KELLY DOLEJSI

I watched Christian Carion’s “Joyeux Noel” (2005, rated PG-13) on the day after Thanksgiving. It was bliss.

After reading about all the Black Friday shootings, stabbings, and stampedes that injured and even killed Christmas shoppers across the United States, it was a poignant relief to see the holiday suppressing violence, and even, temporarily, stopping a war.

“Joyeux Noel” (or “Merry Christmas” in French) tells the true story of a brief cease-fire among French, Scottish and German troops on Christmas Eve 1914, in the thick of The Great War.
