YMCA Summer Fencing Program Tonight

The Summer YMCA Fencing program will start at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 5. Registration can be made on-line or at the YMCA front desk.
 
It will consist mostly of open bouting with some limited individual instruction. Fencers from the Advanced class that ended March 1, plus fencers from the recent Beginning class, are welcome to attend. Any other fencers here in Los Alamos for the Summer are encouraged to join our group.

Los Alamos Public Schools will begin hosting a free Summer Food Service Program June 11 to Aug. 3 in conjunction with the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department.
 
This free lunch program is being provided by the school district’s food service partners, Chartwells is at Aspen Elementary School. No ID or paperwork is necessary.
 
A full lunch will be provided noon to 1 p.m., snacks 1-1:15 p.m. and all meals are served on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must be 1-18 years of age to receive a meal.

White Rock resident Tom Wyant spoke recently at a Rotary Club meeting, describing ways to identify local snakes. Here he holds a bull snake. ESPNAOLA This week, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded the Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program (RAALP) a $9,000 grant to support free, student-centered, one-to-one tutoring to adult Basic Literacy and English-as-a-Second-Language students.
 
This local grant award is part of more than $8.3 million in grants awarded to more than 1,000 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 44 states that Dollar General serves.

LAPS Technology Department Hiring Summer Interns

Interns will work 20 to 30 hours per week starting June 11 and finishing no later than Aug 3. Students will be paid the Intern rate of $8.35 per hour.

As the mom of a September-birthday child, I have experienced the “joys” of missing the cutoff for kindergarten. It was in my struggle to find adequate childcare last fall that I happened upon Canyoncito Montessori—a bright light in a dark time.
