'Scale of Justice' Sculpture Installed at Justice Center

The "Scale of Justice" sculpture created by Jemez Springs artist Troy Williams was installed today in front of the Justice Center at 2500 Trinity Dr. 

The Arts in Public Places Board (APPB) and Los Alamos County plan to hold an official dedication of the sculpture at 3 p.m., Aug. 22.

This sculpture displays 12 jurors from all walks of life, based on actual community members. They are made of steel as is the scale on which they stand.

The Los Alamos Community Health Council (LACHC) is sponsoring a Faith Community “Health Speak Out” Town Hall Meeting noon-1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at the First United Methodist Church, 715 Diamond Dr.

The goal of the Town Hall is to gather information from the faith communities, agencies and people involved with providing emergency and basic needs services.

LACHC will also share a summary of its 2011-2012 LACHC Los Alamos County Health Profile.

Bring your own brown bag lunch. Drinks will be supplied.

Diamond Drive near Golf Course
Starting Monday, July 30, after the morning commute, traffic control will be in place on Diamond Drive in the vicinity of the Golf Course to repair a leaking irrigation line. The outside lanes of both northbound and southbound traffic will be closed and the bike lanes will be shifted inwards to provide a safe work zone for shoulder work.

15th Street Remains Closed as Road Work Advances

15th Street remained closed Friday as road work continues between Central Avenue and Trinity Drive. RMCI is working diligently to reopen this road as soon as possible. Motorists are urged to use 20th Street or Knecht Street as alternative routes.

Local Celebrities Needed for Dunking Event

The Los Alamos Teen Center is hosting a School of Rock.

Musicians from the Teen Center are forming bands to perform 2-7 p.m., Aug. 11 at Central Park Square.

Local well-known people are needed to participate in a dunk tank activity - to date, Teen Center Director Michelangelo Lobato is the sole person to volunteer to be dipped in the tank.

During the Aug. 11 event, the Teen Center also will sell food, hold a bake sale and conduct a silent auction.


All proceeds from the School of Rock event go toward purchasing musical instruments for the Los Alamos Teen Center.

Council Seeks Public Comment Before Aug. 7

The Los Alamos County Council is seeking community input on the Valles Caldera National Preserve’s new Public Access and Use Plan (Plan.)

The Plan, part of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) released by the Trust in June 2012, presents six options for locating and constructing a new visitor and interpretation center, as well as developing infrastructure and access to the many uses offered at the Preserve.

Bridge Club Hosts 3-Day Sectional Tournament

The Los Alamos Contract Bridge Club is hosting the "Atomic City Sectional"  tournament at the Betty Ehart Senior Center Friday through Sunday.

Up to 100 visitors will be in town, some staying two to three nights and looking for a good meal.

If you want to play, sessions start at 2 p.m. Friday, July 27.

A partner is helpful, but not necessary. Visitors welcome.

Rain Washes Out 15th Street Today

The road construction activities on 15th Street between Trinity and Central Avenue were flooded with this afternoon's rain event, making the roadway impassable.

This section of 15th Street has been closed until conditions improve. RMCI will be working diligently to reopen this road as soon as possible.

Motorists are urged to use 20th Street or Knecht Street as alternative routes. Those wishing to access businesses in this section of 15th Street are asked to park off Deacon Street and are reminded to use area crosswalks.

Golf Course Springs a Leak

Los Alamos County staff announced today that there is a water leak in a pressurized irrigation line at the Los Alamos Golf Course.

The irrigation line, which serves the Golf Course south of Diamond Drive has been shut off and water trucks are being used to water the greens, tee boxes and fairways until irrigation service can be restored.

County staff will be running a camera through the irrigation line in an attempt to isolate the leak location and damage.

Once the extent of damage is assessed, the appropriate repairs will be made.

The Los Alamos Creative District will be having its first Art Market this Sunday, July 29. 

The location will be an outdoor space held at the Hive at 134 N.M. 4 in White Rock.

The market will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is free to the public who attend. 

The Hive is also close by the parking and shuttle stop for the Bandelier National Monument. 

We will be featuring several local artists. Michael Martinez who creates Native Jewelry, Jennifer Moss who makes handmade ethnic jewelry, Gadiel Ramirez who specializes in homemade chili and corn decorations along with produce.

Bobby Keys & The Attitudes Perform Friday at LANB

A soul of rock ‘n roll, a solid man, and also a depraved maniac.” I hope that interests you because Bobby is playing the Los Alamos County Summer Concert Series with his New Mexico band, the Attitudes this Friday, July 27 at Los Alamos National Bank. The show is free and starts at 7PM.

Bobby is best known as the “6th” man of the Rolling Stones. He says “I’m not a member of the Stones but a well-paid assistant.” He is the sax player with the best known solos in the world.

County's Next Quick Start Tennis Program Begins July 30

When Tanner Stewart grabbed around a child-sized tennis racket, he began to smile.

“The big rackets are really heavy,” said Tanner, who is in the 4 to 7 age group session of the Quick Start Tennis Program. “I like swinging the smaller rackets, I can hit the ball and it’s more fun.”

Tanner was among the 16 children in the 4 to 7 year olds who participated in the Los Alamos County tennis program that ran from July 9 to July 19 at the Canyon Tennis Courts.

The Ponderosa Putt-Putt Tournament is 6-7:30 p.m., today (Wednesday, July 25) at East Park.

Participants will test their skills at the Ponderosa Putt-Putt Tournament. The tournament is broken into three age groups, 5-7, 8-11 and 12+.

Prizes will be awarded for first through third place in each age group.

County Launches Citizen Satisfaction Survey

Residents in Los Alamos County may receive a phone call or “person on the street” interview during the next two weeks, asking for their feedback on County government.

The County has been regularly conducting these citizen satisfaction surveys every other year since 1996.

The purpose of the citizen survey is to gather public opinion on a variety of subjects, including satisfaction with County services and programs.

Whenever possible, the County uses the information for reporting on performance measures for service improvements.

Smart House Takes Shape

As part of the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities NEDO project, a 2,418 square foot "Smart House" is being built behind the Century Link Building (formerly Qwest) at 1925 Trinity Dr.

Framing for the building is nearly completed and a ribbon cutting ceremony for the project is scheduled for 2 p.m., Sept. 17.

County Building Dog Park Across From Former FEMAville Trailer Site

Los Alamos County plans to begin this week building a dog park across the street from the former FEMAville Trailer Site set up in the North Mesa area of town after the Cerro Grande Fire.

Parks crews have started cleaning and clearing the sand and the area for site prep.

The contract for the fencing has been okayed and the sun shelter is expected to be delivered this week.

The new dog park is scheduled for completion by the end of August.




Be Alert for Flash Flooding During Monsoon Season

Los Alamos County is reminding residents of the dangers of thunderstorms and flash flooding, which could be extremely high in the canyons of Los Alamos, due to last year's Las Conchas Wildfire.

Flash flooding occurs when precipitation falls too quickly on saturated soil or dry soil that has poor absorption ability.

The runoff collects in low-lying areas and rapidly flows downhill.
