Thursday's DWI Checkpoint Nets Zero Arrests

As part of its crackdown on motorists driving in Los Alamos County under the influence of alcohol or drugs, local police officers set up a DWI Checkpoint Thursday evening by the airport near the entrance to town. The Los Alamos Police Department reported that 174 vehicles were checked between 7-11 p.m., during which two field sobriety tests were conducted. Those tests turned out to be negative for substance abuse and the end result of Thursday's checkpoint operation was zero arrests and zero citations. Photo by Carol A. Clark/ladailypost.com

The Law is Clear for Motorists and Bicyclists

In the last few months, there have been two crashes on Diamond Drive that occurred when a right turning motorist crossed the new bike lanes in close proximity to a bicyclist riding in the bike lane.

Some of the law is not exactly clear with regard to sharing roads with bike lanes and turning across bike lanes, but the law on changing lanes is crystal clear.

N.M. 4 Improvements Project
Traffic continues to be switched to one lane of traffic on each side of the road. Expect traffic control changes as the contractor prepares to place the last layer of pavement treatment, which will depend on weather. The speed limit within the construction area is 30 mph. Please drive defensively and watch for construction vehicles.
 
Pavement Preservation Program
Starting on Monday, work will begin on Cheryl Court, followed by Cheryl Avenue, and then Connie Avenue. Each street should take 2-3 days, depending on weather.

County Hosts Ponderosa Putt-Putt Tournament

The Los Alamos County Recreation Division will present the Ponderosa Putt-Putt Tournament at 6 p.m., Wednesday July 25 at East Park.

Putt-Putt registration forms are available at the Aquatic Center and must be returned to the Aquatic Center.

The deadline for pre-registration is 5 p.m., Monday July 23.

Registration is limited to 20 participants per age category.

Age categories are separated as follows:

  • 5-7 Years
  • 8-11 Years
  • 12+ Years

No County Council Meeting July 31

The Los Alamos County Administrator's Office reports that the Regular Session of the County Council that was scheduled for 7 p.m., July 31 in Council Chambers has been canceled.

Any item tentatively set for that date has been moved to the Aug. 7 Council meeting.

Get Ready for 38th Annual Los Alamos Triathlon

Join the Los Alamos Recreation Division Saturday, Aug. 18, as it presents the 38th Annual Los Alamos Triathlon in all its glory.

The 20k bike ride is back to its old course of challenging climbs and beautiful scenery; then jump in the pool (feet first) for a 400 meter swim; and conclude with the 5K run from the Aquatic Center to the First Baptist Church on Diamond Drive and then turning around and running back to the Aquatic Center.

The Los Alamos triathlon was organized by Bill and Maureen Hudson in 1975 and is the longest running continuous triathlon in the country.

Muni Complex Walls Take Shape

Workers install drywall to the steel frame of the new Municipal Complex downtown on Central Avenue. The project remains on track for completion in Fall 2013. A “topping off” public event when the last piece of steel is set into place for the building is expected later this summer. Local Fire Restrictions Relax at Noon Today!

The Los Alamos County Fire Department will relax its fire restrictions at noon today to Stage I in Los Alamos County.

 

This relaxation of fire restrictions is based upon:

  • Local weather improvement, including:
  • Recent regular rainfall
  • The local (7) day forecast that reflects the apparent onset of the monsoon season
  • Rising humidity values in the weather
  • Fuel condition improvements, including:
  • Reduction in Fire Danger Level, from Extreme to High
  • Reduction in Ignition Potential, from 100% to 70%
  • Increase in the Dead Fuel Moistures to double-digit levels.
  • Daily fire occurrence

U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings, R-WA, Chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources, announced July 6 that his committee will vote on the Manhattan Project National Historical Park Act Wednesday, July 11.

 

Hastings said"I expect the Committee will vote to favorably advance the bill to the full House for consideration.

In the late 1970’s changes came in rock/pop/punk music. It was the post-punk and disco era. One popular subgenre in rock was dubbed New Wave. Some of the stars of this scene were the Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, The Cars, Blondie, B52s, a-ha, Duran Duran, Inxs, The Cure, The Police, Bow Wow Wow, XTC, Siouxsie & the Banshees and many, many more.

Domestic Dispute Leads to Possible Self-injury

Police responded to a possible domestic dispute around 10:45 a.m. today in White Rock. 

A man was transported to the Los Alamos Detention Center. 

Capt. Randy Foster said the man became animated in the police car on the way to the jail, thrashing his head against the interior of the vehicle. 

Upon arrival at the jail, police called Los Alamos Fire Department EMT personnel as a pecaution to check out the man's potential injuries.

Downtown Without Power Wednesday Night

DPU News:

Businesses and some residences in the Los Alamos downtown area lost power for more than three hours Wednesday night.

The outage, bounded by 20th Street to East Road and Central Avenue to Trinity Drive, was caused when a cable termination failed, according to Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities officials.

While electric lineman began receiving reports of the outage at midnight, other indicators suggest that the outage began just after 11 p.m. July 4.

Crews were dispatched, isolated the fault and repaired the cable termination and by 2:30 a.m., had restored power.

The Los Alamos Community Winds performed The Stars & Stripes Forever as a sky diver parachutes toward the lawn at Overlook Park before an intense cloud burst sent everyone fleeing for shelter - effectively ending the holiday event.
