2012 High Mountain Mudfest Mud Volleyball Tournament Set for July 21

The Los Alamos County Recreation Division is hosting the 8th Annual High Mountain Mudfest Mud Volleyball Tournament Saturday, July 21 at the North Mesa Mud Pits.

Games start at 9 a.m., and each team must have six to 12 players, with a minimum of four women.

The cost is $130 per team. The deadline for registration is 5 p.m., Thursday July 19.

Business Leaders Advocate for LANL Budget

A delegation of New Mexico business leaders will travel to Washington D.C. July 16 and 17 to discuss the importance of Los Alamos National Laboratory to the state’s economy.

The delegation will be accompanied by Gov. Susana Martinez' Chief of Staff Keith Gardner and Los Alamos County Council Chair Sharon Stover.

Stover is a member of the Regional Coalition of LANL Communities, which traveled to Washington, D.C., on a similar mission in March. .

The current business group plans to meet with New Mexico’s Congressional delegation, staff from key committees in both the U.S.

West Road Closed Today for Debris Cleanup

The Los Alamos County Public Works Department reports that Wednesday’s rain storm resulted in about a foot of water flowing through Los Alamos Canyon and the Ice Rink parking lot.

County crews had completed barrier work around the rink in June to provide protective measures to the Rink, and the barriers held up well – no water entered the Ice Rink and there is no damage to that structure.

Pavement Division Manager Tom Roach has indicated that DOE has reported they will close West Road today to allow their crews to enter and clean up road debris.

Los Alamos Municipal Court Closed July 18-20

The Los Alamos Municipal Court will be closed July 18, 19 and 20 for staff to attend training.

Santa Fe National Forest Lifts Fire Restrictions

SFNF News:

Effective at 8 a.m., Thursday July 12, the Santa Fe National Forest will go from Stage 2 Fire Restrictions to no fire restrictions forest-wide, to include the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

Current monsoon rains and favorable weather forecasts are allowing for the complete lifting of fire restrictions.

“We’ve experienced some of the driest conditions this forest has seen in many years,” said Santa Fe National Forest Supervisor, Maria T. Garcia.

Council Approves Community Broadband Project Market Survey

In a 5 to 2 vote, the Los Alamos County Council approved a Community Broadband Network (CBN) market survey so that the business plan will include customer input regarding funding, pricing and debt options. The Community Broadband Project is near completion. The engineering design is 90 percent complete. The design review was completed by NI Solutions.

Council Considers White Rock Civic Center

A committee worked for six weeks to redesign the White Rock Civic Center complex. Option 1 is being recommended for approval. This includes a new library building located near the existing skate park in White Rock. This option also assumes repurposing the existing library and the existing Senior Center for a redesigned Senior Center which would include a commercial kitchen. Laurent noted that Option 3 did not receive a lot of support among the stakeholders.

Thursday's DWI Checkpoint Nets Zero Arrests

As part of its crackdown on motorists driving in Los Alamos County under the influence of alcohol or drugs, local police officers set up a DWI Checkpoint Thursday evening by the airport near the entrance to town. The Los Alamos Police Department reported that 174 vehicles were checked between 7-11 p.m., during which two field sobriety tests were conducted. Those tests turned out to be negative for substance abuse and the end result of Thursday's checkpoint operation was zero arrests and zero citations. Photo by Carol A. Clark/

The Law is Clear for Motorists and Bicyclists

In the last few months, there have been two crashes on Diamond Drive that occurred when a right turning motorist crossed the new bike lanes in close proximity to a bicyclist riding in the bike lane.

Some of the law is not exactly clear with regard to sharing roads with bike lanes and turning across bike lanes, but the law on changing lanes is crystal clear.

Public Works Projects:

N.M. 4 Improvements Project
Traffic continues to be switched to one lane of traffic on each side of the road. Expect traffic control changes as the contractor prepares to place the last layer of pavement treatment, which will depend on weather. The speed limit within the construction area is 30 mph. Please drive defensively and watch for construction vehicles.
Pavement Preservation Program
Starting on Monday, work will begin on Cheryl Court, followed by Cheryl Avenue, and then Connie Avenue. Each street should take 2-3 days, depending on weather.

County Hosts Ponderosa Putt-Putt Tournament

The Los Alamos County Recreation Division will present the Ponderosa Putt-Putt Tournament at 6 p.m., Wednesday July 25 at East Park.

Putt-Putt registration forms are available at the Aquatic Center and must be returned to the Aquatic Center.

The deadline for pre-registration is 5 p.m., Monday July 23.

Registration is limited to 20 participants per age category.

Age categories are separated as follows:

  • 5-7 Years
  • 8-11 Years
  • 12+ Years
