County Working to Bring Commuter Plane to Los Alamos

Los Alamos County is holding meetings this week with New Mexico Airlines to bring a commuter airline service to Los Alamos.

The service will transport passengers to the Albuquerque Sunport.

Public Works Department Director Philo S. Shelton III said that this week's meetings include discussing flight schedules and frequency of service.

"We are looking at using a 9-passenger plane, so for convenience of service we will offer more frequent flights," Shelton said.


Art Board Recommends Moving 'Strange Trio'

The Art in Public Places Board will present its recommendation to Council at 7 p.m. in the Community Building today, Nov. 13, to re-locate the "Strange Trio" sculpture by Tommy Hicks to Overlook Park in White Rock. The sculpture used to be located between the former Los Alamos Police Station and Trinity Drive. It developed problems with the concrete base and has been in storage for approximately five years. Lodgers' Tax Board Meeting Place Changed

NOTE: The location of the Lodgers' Tax Advisory Board meeting place scheduled from 1-3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13 has changed. 

It will be held at the conference room in the County Administrator’s Offices at 133 Central Park Square.

The Hive to Address Council Tuesday

We would like to invite the community to join us at the County Council meeting beginning at 7 p.m., Tuesday in the Community Building.

The Council has been presented with a petition for an immediate $36,000 grant to sustain operations of The Hive through February of next year and to request that the Council direct County staff to work with The Hive in developing an expanded grant application.

This short paper addresses the most efficient and direct way that the County can promote REAL and SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT in Los Alamos County.

County Wants Folks to ‘Take A Hike’

Los Alamos County is encouraging visitors to “take a hike” during national “Take a Hike Day” Nov. 17.

Take a Hike Day, which encourages Americans to get outdoors and move. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, less than half of all adults get enough physical activity to improve their health.

Los Alamos is not only considered the “healthiest County in the country,” (Bloomberg News) but it has more official hiking trails in the Southwest compared to most same-sized cities and counties.

  • Proposed Renovation Plan Cuts Project Cost By Half

In May 2012, the Los Alamos County Council directed staff to explore renovating and leasing existing space at Central Park Square, across from Fuller Lodge, for use as a new Teen Center. 

The proposed space will be approximately 9,500 square feet based on the earlier feasibility study. A small group of residents gathered Nov. 1 for a project update.

Deacon Closed at 15th Monday, Nov. 12

Monday, Nov. 12, the Eastern Area 2 project contractor will be working to install a valley gutter across Deacon at 15th Street.  

Assuming the weather cooperates, the valley gutter will be excavated and concrete should be placed by the end of day Monday.

Once the concrete is finished off, the contractor will place a steel plate across the intersection and reopen the intersection.

The fresh concrete will need to cure for five days. Depending on the weather received over the weekend, the work may be delayed until Tuesday.

The Los Alamos County Clerk's Office reports that Los Alamos County voters cast 10,684 ballots in the 2012 General Election, which came to a close Tuesday night. 
The majority of those votes were cast early or absentee with 3,528 cast on election day, Nov. 6.
Voters approved all four proposed Charter Amendments, which was a highly contested issue throughout the campaign season.

Nov. 8 Transportation Board Meeting Canceled

Community Broadband Network Survey Underway

Through Saturday Nov. 10, Los Alamos County will be surveying residents regarding their option of the Community Broadband Network; a “last-mile” fiber network that will provide open and advanced broadband communications access to all Los Alamos County citizens, businesses and institutions.

The November lecture is a brief history of the Wendover Airfield in Utah by James Petersen

James Petersen’s talk on Historic Wendover Airfield will touch on the origin of Wendover, Utah, and then focus on the period from the inception of the Army Air Force base to the end of World War II.

The history of the B-17 and B-24 bomber training as well as the contribution of Wendover to the Manhattan project will be discussed.

DPU Proposes Sewer Rate Increase and Restructure

DPU News:

Officials with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU) will recommend a sewer rate adjustment to the Board of Public Utilities at its Nov. 14 meeting. 

If approved, the proposed sewer ordinance will go to the County Council to be considered for adoption in January. 

The proposed ordinance increases overall sewer rates but also simplifies residential customers’ bills to a restructured flat fee every month. 

It removes the variable rate that is based on the amount of potable water consumed during winter months.
