Los Alamos County Princess Honors Horses for Heroes

After relocating to New Mexico from Maryland in 2010, the incoming Los Alamos County Princess, Julia Montoya, continued to pursue her passion for horses and interest in horsemanship with the Turquoise Trail Wranglers 4-H Club. 

The club leaders, Rick Iannucci and Nancy DeSantis, also operate the non-profit Horses for Heroes - New Mexico Inc. Cowboy Up! program for wounded veterans.

County Issues Spectator Directions for Rodeo at Brewer Arena

Be advised that spectators attending the Los Alamos County Rodeo at Brewer Arena this weekend will be directed to the Spectator Entrance off of San Ildefonso Road through the South Gate to the Rodeo grounds.

The Recreation Division’s goal is to limit traffic through the North Mesa Stables for the safety of the North Mesa Stable Lot users and their animals.

Fire and Police Host Final 'Movie in the Park' Event

The Los Alamos Fire and Police Departments sponsored the final Movie in the Park with the Los Alamos County Recreation Department Wednesday. The movie, “Firehouse Dog,” began at sundown. Prior to the movie, police and firefighters hosted fun activities for children including relay races, a chance to check out a police car and a fire engine from the inside out, and more.

Summer Art Camp Ensures Artistry Never Stops

Fuller Lodge Art Center calls its Summer Art Camp "The Best Six Weeks of Summer" for children from Los Alamos, surrounding communities and even foreign countries. Courtesy photo


This summer 80 to 100 students age 4 through 6 grade filled the classrooms at Fuller Lodge Art Center on Central Avenue each week, while teens met for classes at Village Arts on DP Road.

Whether painting, drawing, sculpting, dying yarn and knitting or creating things from recycled materials, these young artists were exploring their creativity with enthusiasm and laughter.

The Los Alamos Recreation Division will be holding the Los Alamos County Rodeo on Aug.11-12 at Brewer Arena on North Mesa.

See the following information concerning parking and directions to Brewer Arena.

Rodeo Contestants: Rodeo contestants will need to bring their livestock to North Mesa Park for animal inspection. North Mesa Park is located on San Ildefonso Road South, (right lane at the roundabout). Signs will direct contestants to the inspection staging area in the park.

Pinching pennies can unleash creativity – just take a look at what will be on sale at the Fuller Lodge Art Center’s Summer Arts and Crafts Fair, which runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday on the lawn behind Fuller Lodge.

It’s Los Alamos County Fair weekend and I’d like to tell you about the Summer Concert Series’ participation.

On Friday night, Aug.10, we’re gonna do a show of country-soul music at Ashley Pond. This means excellent country music played with soul. Sound strange? Not at all.

There’s been Ray Charles with all of his country hits in the early 60’s, Joe South, Joe Tex, Charlie Rich, Flying Burrito Bros., O.C.

NMFA Arrests Shouldn't Impact Los Alamos

Two top officials from the New Mexico Finance Authority have been arrested for state securities violations related to a fake financial audit.
Chief Operating Officer John T. Duff of the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department's Securities Division and former controller Greg Michael Campbell were booked at 9:08 a.m. today into the Santa Fe County Jail.

Duff, 70, is facing eight counts of fraud and one count of conspiracy, according to court records. Campbell, 52, resigned his post in June.

Community Invited to Submit Letters of Interest for Council Vacancy

Los Alamos County Council Chair Sharon Stover announced during Tuesday night's Council meeting that beginning today, Council will accept letters of interest from community members who would like to be considered to fill the unexpired term of Councilor Ron Selvage, who resigned last week.

His term will expire Dec. 31, 2014.

Applicants must be a registered voter and resident of Los Alamos County, and cannot be employed by the County.

They should submit a letter of interest explaining their background, experience and why they are interested in the position.

Council Proclaims August 'Assets Building Month'

Council proclaims the month of August 2012 as "Assets Building Month" in Los Alamos County and presents the proclamation to Assets Coordinator Bernadette Lauritzen as her son passes out cookies to Councilors and staff. The 40 Developmental Assets Program, a program of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Board, identifies 40 building blocks that help youth grow up healthy, caring and responsible.
