Candy canes for the kids and a free drawing for a $50 gift certificate to Blue Window are part of the fun scheduled 5-7 p.m. Saturday at Zia Realty Group's new offices at the corner of 15th Street and Central Avenue.

Kids also will have the opportunity to sign up for a chance to win a train set during the family fun event going on as part of the Christmas Light Parade on Central Avenue.

Local Mix Martial Artist and Progressive Fighting Systems (PFS) Full Instructor Lawrence Garcia recently attended an invitation only Military, Law Enforcement, Contractor (MALC) training by a division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at U.S. Army Camp Atterbury in Indiana.  

He assisted in instructing the Edge Weapon and Hand to Hand Combat Program portion of this specialized training course.

Grant Funds Española YMCA Teen Center Welding Program

ESPANOLA – Youth may participate in new sculptural welding arts program at the Española YMCA Teen Center thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Presbytery of Santa Fe.

Sculptural welding had been a favorite of the teens, according to Center Director Ben Sandoval, but the volunteer who lent his equipment found it too difficult to haul it to the Center. The program had been defunct for the last 18 months but this grant will enable the purchase of a welder, safety equipment and supplies, said Sandoval.

Full Day of Activities at Fuller Lodge Open House

The annual Fuller Lodge Open House is Saturday, Dec. 7. The Los Alamos Arts Council, along with the Art Center at Fuller Lodge and the Historical Society, will kick off the holiday season at the Lodge, Los Alamos' best known historic building and its cultural and artistic center. 

Fuller Lodge is decorated for the holidays. Come by and enjoy the holiday spirit and all of the festivities planned for the Open House.

This year, the festivities begin with the Chamisa SingSations at 10 a.m.

Every year, for the past 10 years joy is brought to children who don’t have the most ideal situation at home.
Each Christmas, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos helps give children in Santa Fe and the surrounding areas, a brighter holiday through the Angel Tree. The Angel Tree is a Christmas tree set up in the church and is covered with tags listing the requests of children in need of gifts. The parish community members fulfill the tag requests to help families who can’t afford presents for their children.

The Los Alamos Co+op Market today closed on the purchase of its 7,000-square-foot building at 95 Entrada Dr. The purchase price is $1.65 million.

Los Alamos Co+op Market has leased the building from Main Gate, LLC since it opened March 2, 2011. Main Gate was instrumental in providing the Co+op with an affordable and timely option when the Co+op was looking for a brick and mortar location nearly four years ago.

The Co+op Board and General Manager Steve Watts worked on the purchase for approximately six months

The congregation bakes Greek and Russian cookies and pastries, including baklava, Russian tea cakes and more.

Earth Treasure Show This Weekend

The Los Alamos Geological Society's 45th Annual Earth Treasure Show is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Masonic Lodge, 15th and Canyon Road.

Admission is free. Ten dealers will offer jewelry, minerals and fossils for sale. The American Legion Women’s Auxiliary will run the snack bar.

The Geological Society will have silent auctions running both days, geode cracking, and a book sale. There will be a craft table for the children. There will be exhibits of New Mexico minerals and fossils. Everyone attending will receive a ticket for a door prize.

IHM Open for Teens Grieving Tyler Van Anne's Passing

The John Paul the Great Center (the Youth Office) at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church will be open all day for any and all teens.

There are snacks, hot chocolate, and blankets to curl up in, as well as youth leaders and deacons available if anyone needs to talk.

20th Annual Los Alamos Crèche Show: Nativity Scenes From Around the World

The Los Alamos Crèche show is an annual exhibition featuring nativity scenes collected by members of many churches in Los Alamos.
 
The event is hosted by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at 1967 18th St., and is free and open to the public. Music and refreshments are provided.


The show begins
1-7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 and ends 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

The Crèche, a French term, is the portrayal of the nativity through figurines of people and animals that often includes the setting of a stable or village scene.

Support Systems Gathering at Teen Center Thursday

Los Alamos Teen Center Director Sylvan Sierra Argo together with other local organizations is pulling together various support networks at the Teen Center for Thursday.

What will be available for teens so far:

  • Michelangelo Lobato will be at the Teen Center on and off throughout the day;
  • Aimee Schnedler (grief counselor) will be at the Teen Center on and off throughout the day;

LAHS Grief Counselors Prepare For Thursday

Los Alamos Public School Superintendent Gene Schmidt addressed today's death of Los Alamos High School student Tyler Van Anne.
 
"We have informed the staff and we are preparing for a good grief day tomorrow," Schmidt said. "Counselors will be standing by when students arrive at school in the morning."
 
Schmidt told the Los Alamos Daily Post late this afternoon that he was attempting to reach out to Van Anne's family.
 
A prayer service was held this evening at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Canyon Road.

Los Alamos High School student Tyler Van Anne passed away this afternoon. A prayer service is being held tonight at 6 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Canyon Road.
 
The Los Alamos Teen Center at Canyon Road and Diamond Drive also is open for teens who would like to gather outside of the service.
 
The Sandoval County Sheriffs Department is investigating Van Anne's death, which occured in Sandoval County. No further details are available at this time.

YMCA Offers Way to Help Families in Need

The Family YMCA is asking the public to help sponsor families in need for the Christmas holiday.

Family members’ wishes are noted on tags hanging on the tree in the front lobby of the main Y. Sponsors are asked to remove a tag from the tree, purchase and wrap the desired gift, and then attach the tag to the outside of the package before returning it to the Y for delivery to the family. 

Gifts must be returned to the Y, wrapped and with the tag attached, by Dec. 17. The Y is open 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 7p.m.

Holiday shopping, check. Gifts wrapped, check. Cards sent, check. Travels planned, check. With so much going on in December to prepare for the holidays, it seems we can easily forget to make time to slow down and enjoy the world around us.

For that reason, the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is promoting “31 Days of Exploring Nature” on the PEEC Facebook page.

Starting Dec. 1 and continuing through the end of the month, PEEC is offering suggestions for exploring and enjoying nature.
