Christkindlmarket at Winterfest Dec. 8

Denver Wealth Management is hosting a Christkindlmarket in conjunction with Winterfest in the parking lot at Central Avenue and 15th Street.

The Christkindlmarket will run 5-9 p.m. Saturday Dec. 8 with vendors from all over Northern New Mexico showcasing a wide array of products available for purchase..

There will be several different styles of artists and jewelers, jams and jellies, craft foods, wood and metal works, clothing and accessories, arts and crafts and German style food and drink.

Everyone is welcome to come enjoy a brisk evening of festive atmosphere.

It is not the usual scene at the Fuller Lodge Art Center. When walking into the space, there is no definite show being displayed in the gallery.

What visitors are greeted with is the Affordable Arts Sale, a treat that only comes once a year.

The space has been cleared and filled with every type of art available. There isn’t a corner or niche in the place that isn’t displaying a piece of jewelry, a painted pottery bowl, a watercolor painting or other pieces of art.

“Everything from lamps to wall art,” Marketing Director Nancy Coombs said.

Winterfest 2012 begins Friday, Dec. 7 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 9.

WinterFest begins with the 19th annual Los Alamos Crèche Show, held annually on the first weekend of December.

“Crèches,” or nativity scenes featuring the Christ child, are prominently displayed by Los Alamos residents for all to see.

Because Los Alamos’ residents come from all over the world, there is always a myriad of beautiful crèches on display.

Festival of Trees at Betty Ehart Saturday

The place to be this Saturday is right in the heart of downtown as Los Alamos MainStreet hosts the 10th annual Festival of Trees at the Betty Ehart Senior Center.

The four-hour festival of fun is just the thing to get into the holiday spirit. The day holds a bevy of holiday trees, decorations, wreaths and more all available by silent auction.

A bake sale and holiday poinsettias will add to the mini mall experience - allowing for one stop shopping. A craft fair will feature jewelry vendors and so much more.

The Los Alamos Arts Council is presenting its annual Holiday Arts and Craft Fair 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

The new venue for this year's fair is the Crossroads Bible Church, Hwy 502, East Entry to Los Alamos, between Hilltop House Hotel and the Airport, south side of road.

Plain Geometry: Amish Quilts explores the origins and aesthetics of a tradition that has evolved in a changing world.

Opening at the Museum of International Folk Art Sunday, March 3, 2013, 34 quilts will be on view from the museum’s collection and from local collectors.

These remarkably crafted textiles illustrate the influence of religious proscriptions, westward migration, and interaction with "English" neighbors. The exhibition runs through Sept. 1, 2013.

In the mid nineties, Chris Ward attended a craft show in Owatonna, Minn. In one of the craft show booths she saw a fabulous beaded bracelet that she absolutely loved.

She wanted to give it to her mother, but was afraid that the colors weren’t quite right.

Instead of forgetting about the bracelet and buying her mom a gift card, she took a class with the woman who made the bracelet, and fell in love with beading.

After covering the lives of drug addicts and prostitutes in America and the struggle of Afghan rebels fighting the Soviets – including a stint as a prisoner of war – Santa Fe-based photojournalist Tony O’Brien turned to Christ in the Desert Monastery in Abiquiu to restore his spirit.

During the year he spent living with the Benedictine monks, they allowed him to document their daily activities and rituals, both contemplative and secular.

Small Works in a Big Show

Art News:

During the last 15 years, Fran Stoval has had six pastels accepted into the Pastel Society of New Mexico Pastel Society (PSNM) show earning her the title of signature member.

PSNM has held a national juried exhibitions annually since 1991. Over the years the show has come to be regarded as one of the best in the nation, attracting artists from states across the country, as well as Canada and Europe.

The 2009 PSNM introduced the Small Works exhibition.

Nutcracker” Nov. 9, 10, 11, 17, and 18 at the Duane W. Smith Auditorium in Los Alamos.

Santa Fe Enchantment, the 2012 national seminar of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, will bring more than 600 needlework enthusiasts from across the country to Buffalo Thunder Resort in Pojoaque from Oct. 28 through Nov. 2. 

Participants will attend classes in all facets of needle arts. Members of the local Pajarito Chapter of EGA are excited to have the opportunity to study with noted teachers without having to travel a long distance.
