Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire Information – 5/25/12 AM Update

Situation: Incident Command Post relocated to the Reserve Fairgrounds on Thursday. Phone numbers for fire information will be changing and an updated number will be posted as soon as possible. In the interim please call the Reserve Ranger District at (575) 533-6231 for fire information.
The Whitewater Fire (detected on Wednesday, May 16) has merged with the Baldy Fire (detected on Wednesday, May 9), and is now being called the Whitewater-Baldy Complex. The fire has now come out of the Gila Wilderness and on to the Gila National Forest in the Willow Creek Subdivision

Senators Engage Air Force on Aggressive Kirtland Fuel Spill Cleanup
U.S. SENATE News:
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall are asking the Air Force to partner with county and state authorities to “conduct further scientific and technical analysis” to determine the scope of the Kirtland jet fuel leak and develop contingency plans for the continued safety of the drinking water.

This is the third in my monthly series on “doings” in District 43.
It will be brief since I submitted previous articles on two major issues this month — Opioid Abuse and on Forest Restoration.
Other activities since the middle of April included a meeting with the Northern New Mexico branch of the National Association of Women Small Business Owners.
I heard many inspiring stories of successful startups in Northern New Mexico, usually at the cost of many, many hours and great financial risk.

Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire Update
STATE FORESTRY News:
Situation: Extreme fire behavior has caused the Whitewater and Baldy Fires to combine, creating the Whitewater-Baldy Complex.
Evacuations of the Willow Creek and Mogollon are still in effect.
Smoke from these fires is clearly visible from the Silver City area and is affecting much of the southern third of New Mexico.
The fire has now come out of the Gila Wilderness and on to the Gila National Forest in the Willow Creek Subdivision, crossed State Road 159 at Silver Creek Divide and is working its way into Mineral Creek.

Quality New Mexico Accepting Examiner Applications

Quality New Mexico is accepting applications for the Board of Examiners through May 31.
Examiners are volunteers who, working in teams, review applications submitted to the New Mexico Performance Excellence Awards program, administered by Quality New Mexico.
The awards program recognizes New Mexico business, government, education, health care and nonprofit organizations for their commitment, progress, or achievement in performance excellence.

Bandelier Extends Public Comment Period

Bandelier National Monument has extended the public comment period on the management of the Tsankawi Unit to June 15.
Earlier this month, the park hosted two public meetings on the planning process.
They invited everyone who is interested in the future of Tsankawi to provide input on how best to manage the cultural and natural resources found there.
The Tsankawi Unit is an 826-acre area that is geographically separate from the main portion of Bandelier National Monument.

State’s Chief Medical Officer Abruptly Resigns

The Los Alamos Daily Post contacted Erin J. Bouquin, MD of Los Alamos after learning that she suddenly resigned her new position as Chief Medical Officer of the New Mexico Department of Health under what appear to be curious circumstances.
Bouquin worked for Cabinet Secretary Catherine Torres who last Monday asked her to do an interview with KOAT Channel 7 for a story on teens engaging in unprotected sex, she said.
Bouquin taped the interview Wednesday morning in Albuquerque.
“It was about sexually transmitted diseases being on the rise among teens in New Mexico,” Bouquin said.
