Women Dies In Police Shooting In Carlsbad

CARLSBAD The New Mexico State Police Investigation Bureau was contacted May 19 to investigate a police shooting involving the Carlsbad Police Department (CPD).
 
At about 3:53 p.m., May 19, 2019, CPD officers responded to 311 Peachtree Street in Carlsbad for a welfare check on a female. When officers arrived at the residence, they encountered Lori Markham, 47, of Carlsbad.

FBI: Former LANL Scientist Charged With Making False Official Statements About His Contacts And Involvement With A Chinese Government Program

FBI News:

ALBUQUERQUE – Turab Lookman, 67, of Santa Fe, made an initial appearance in federal court today on charges of making false official statements about his involvement with a program established by the Chinese government to recruit people with access to and knowledge of foreign technology and intellectual property.

The FBI arrested Lookman yesterday after a grand jury indicted him on Wednesday on three counts of making false official statements about being recruited by and applying to participate in China’s Thousand Talents Program for personal compensation.

Hydrant Testing Begins Next Week Through August

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) will be testing fire hydrants throughout Los Alamos County starting next week and activity will be continuing through August.

The purpose of hydrant testing is to ensure that they will provide an adequate water supply for fire suppression and to flush out sediments that have accumulated in the water distribution system over the past year.

On the job in Los Alamos are Melisa Thurgood and Tom Houlton who volunteer for the Los Alamos Fire Brigade Search and Rescue. SANTA FE Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham Tuesday announced her plan to increase Medicaid hospital reimbursement rates for inpatient and outpatient services by $168.7 million effective July 1.
 
The hospital reimbursement increases are part of a multi-phase strategy to address the low Medicaid reimbursement rates for those who deliver care and services to the most vulnerable New Mexicans and help rebuild and protect New Mexico’s health care delivery network. LAPD Conducts Traffic Enforcement; DWI Checkpoints

In an effort to keep the community safe, LAPD will conduct random DWI checkpoints throughout the County throughout the summer. File photo

LAPD News:

Now through the summer, the Los Alamos Police Department will conduct traffic enforcement, focusing on accident related violations.

There also will be random DWI checkpoints throughout the County during this time frame.

The public can help reduce the risk of vehicle crashes by adhering to posted speed limit signs, allowing enough room between them and the vehicle they are following and driving with caution when roadways are wet.

County Crew Repairing Water Break On Walnut Street

COUNTY News:

Water crews with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities are working in the road to repair a water line break on Walnut Street.

There should be no interruption of water services to customers.

Repairs are estimated to be completed around noon today.
